Wisconsin Rig (Alabama style)

So, its obvious the alabama style rig seems to be a popular thing recently. In Wisconsin we are only allowed 3 lures (3 hooks) to catch fish. Obviously 5 baits in the water even without hooks is illegal in Wiscoonsin. I wouldn't recomend throwing a 5 lure design around the state. Instead of the 5 lures on a 'Bama rig, time will tell when we start seeing 3 lure rigs. Anybody have any homemade ones maybe or info on 3 lure rigs? Im thinking it could be an amazing whitebass rig with the run coming soon.

Fleet Farm has some for sale, some with 2 weights and 3 hooks and some with just 3 hooks.

I did talk to the DNR this week and I did talk to warden Ben at the Milwaukee office and I did call the Madison office and I tralked to Carol there. They both told me that the Alabama Rig is legal in wisconsin as long as you only have 3 hooks and that you can have 5 baits = 2 fake baits and 3 with hooks! Big Smile Yawn

The difference is that there is no hook on the 2 baits so the DNR does not consider them "baits", to be a "bait" it needs to have a hook on it. Things similiar to this have been used on Lake Michigan for years.

You could always ask the DNR yourself.

Did you actually click the link, or no? It says right in there that its okay to put hookless spinners on there. In fact, I think I'm gonna try that this summer.

The spinners are still lures. What would the difference be from a plastic minnow bait without a hook and a mepps without a hook? Technically I would think you could only put literally JUST spinners, making almost a funky spinnerbait basically.

In Wisconsin we are only allowed 3 lures (3 hooks) to catch fish. Obviously 5 baits in the water even without hooks is illegal in Wiscoonsin. I wouldn't recomend throwing a 5 lure design around the state. If you wouldn't recommend it then you'll be missing out. To make your 5 line Alabama rig legal to use in WI, simply cut off 2 of the 'lures' and replace them with inline spinners (obviously without hooks) or something similar which are not considered lures. There is already a musky version out in both 5 and 3 bait configurations. It's only a matter of time before other manufacturers follow suit. Wisconsin DNR Warden Wire - Alabama style fishing rigs

The April 2012 Bassmaster magazine had an article on the various companies that have Alabama rigs for sale. I didn't count them, but there are a lot. There are already a few that only have three wires for states that have the three bait regulations.
