That video is awesome. Those guys rule! That could make for a good tv series or competitive sport. Liability issues likely and I'm sure PETA would have something to say on the matter, but if we can't win the war let's make peace (or in this case pieces). I have some great ideas for fighting them, too. Catfish will be eating good at least! Plenty of cutbait for em.
Well Lake-linkers, if you want to hear a great and inspiring story, do a google on "Pelicans and Asian Carp". Pelicans have learned how to herd and capture Asian Carp. There are some pictures taken in Illinois and Missouri of pelicans with a pretty good sized fish in their pouch. It is said to be a site to behold. One artice I read was titled - "Asian Carp problems? - Bring on the Pelicans".
I live outside of Peoria...and these things have taken over the river. They do commercially fish them, but the price is so low (less than 5 cents a pound), there is little incentive to get them. For a while, the local rumor was that Kraft was buying them and making them into fish sticks...but someone "blew the whistle" and Kraft fearing their reputation of marketing Asian carp as the fish in their fish sticks, made them pull out of the carp market. Downriver in Havana, the there is a company extracting the fish oil from them to sell to some vitamin company...and the remaining fish byproduct is going into fertilizer.
The best (and I think only way) to control these things are make them profitable to commercial fish and sell. Put some government price support on this...like they do with corn, soybeans and tobacco...and if you can't create a national market here, ship them overseas. I can't believe with an enormous protein source like this one no one has developed an idea how to capitalize on it...even if the carp are dried and ground down into powder. If the profit is high enough, everyone and his brother will be netting these things...and within a year you will see a significant decrease in their presence in the Illinois River. If not...its over.
And don't think some electric barrier is going to keep them out of Lake Michigan. These things are so prolific, all you would need is a few fingerlings making it past that barrier and it is "Katty, bar the doors!!"
By the way, their meat is incredibly white (once you bleed them). I have tasted them and they are similar to buffalo...not crappie or walleye standards but not bad. Pretty boney but those who know how to clean them can make boneless filets.
In Peoria, Il. there is a group of unique individuals that have a solution to the Asian Carp.
