Waterpig,
Very sorry to hear about your dog's passing. My Sundays and Mondays are my busiest days right now. Tuesdays and parts of Thursdays with occasional forays on Fridays are my only fishing times now until after mid may. The gills seem to be in prespawn right now, but as soon as they start coming in, we need to go have some fun! BTW, the trout have been just crushing my flies this season!!!
goh,
Sadly there will be no more of my special pet hair nymphs from my dog. Had to sadly put him down due to cancer last Friday. I still have one or two left though so those will be reserved for special occasions when I am alone and want to reminise. Trying to develope one from my cat now...though he isn't taking kindly to me trying to clip some hair..also doesn't have the same properties as the mutt had.
We will see I guess.
I still have some sundays and Mondays available at times to fish....let me know. I really want to hit a fcertain shoreline for gills again.
iceman,
For some reason, my messenger wouldn't let me reply you. Anyhow, the best fly tiers I've met had a great command over both traditional and non traditional materials...everything from duct tape and weather stripping to plastic bag strips and other strange ideas. They all worked leading to the idea that an open mind with great curiosity and a wide imagination are important to fly tiers. If a person is truly in a frugal state of being (I know many other fly anglers here are as well!) materials become too costly to buy at your every whim, so we have to start looking around. I know at least one fly angler has used hair from his pets successfully... One possible streamer idea outside the norm would be to grab an old T-shirt the Missus of the house is trying to pack into the garbage can and cut it up. Cut some long ovals with the short end sporting a squared off extended lip section that you'll put one longitudinal cut into. You can tie this onto the hook shank near the hook bend. After that, the frilly section of an old rag works if you cut that off, tie in a corner and palmer to the hook eye to create the head and body. Then, grab some sharpies or other permanent markers and get your Picasso on and voila! New streamers unlike most others on the market. If you're a frugal angler, you can use bead chain from nail clippers, or you can buy some at the hardware store for peanuts for weighting the fly. Just some out of the box thinking. I believe there are some fish tail products made out of chamois material using this same idea. They're worth checking out as additional ideas for creating new possibilities. Cheers!
Crud.. We use to have a thread that had a bunch of stuff on it.. I guess it got shelved from lack of use.
Anyway, we can start over.
Not sure if you have visited Charlie Craven's website. In my opinion it has the best Fly Pattern database out there to date.
He's a super nice guy as well...
