During a conversation about the success I've been having with spoons on my fly rod, a colleague told me that "back in the day" back in the 70s and early 80's they used to make spoons out of silly puddy and epoxy and use them on their fly rods.

Guess it was pretty main stream.

Goh- you up for another stupidly"blank" challenge?

Anthony,

I actually read an article on how to make those silly putty epoxy spoons.  I even have all the materials, but I lack the motivation.  Also, I'm just not convinced that an epoxy spoon will outfish my sculpin or nymph patterns due to the type of action that fly fishing spoons get.  I'd be more likely to use a willow spoon and change the hook on it at the end of my fly rod, but even that's a stretch!  And yes, Anthony, I am always up for another stupidly blank challenge!!!LOL!!!  Just no more chubs!!!!  LOL!!

You can use a spinner blade or mrs cleo, best to use a spin caster unless your proficient with a spey or center pin rod though generally need a good amount of weight to work effectivly in fast water where spoons are most effective

Maybe that's why good ole Aldo Leopold smoked. He needed a butt or two incase of a pinch... I suspect not but a good thought.

That is CRAZy. Back in the day I heard a cigarette filter on a hook with a nice drift and the occasional twitch was the gold standard. You and your elete fly fishing colleagues should give it a try. Resurect a lost art!

I did a google search and it seems that a couple of fly fishing forums share posts, but I have to yet find instructions or a real history of this movement.
