Flicker Shad Depth

Does a flicker shad run close in depth to say a shad rap or wally diver? I've got an out dated precision trolling book, and flicker shads aren't in there. (my problem right? go buy a new one!) I run 10 lb test line. Looking for a good starter reference? thanks for any help.

New to planer board fishing. So my question is how far do you set the board from the flicker shads? Im going to be using#4-7 flicker shads. Any info would help me tremendously. Thanks

Not sure if I agree with the dive chart of these lures but I could be wrong. Below is a post I made the other day questioning my tactic's when using these lures and pulling boards. Please read it and give your advise. Posts here or pm's welcome. Thank you Vince "After following reports here on Bago I'm curious as to some of the tactic's being used including my own when pulling boards. It seems that most of you are letting out a bunch of line from the boards to your lures. I have read on the flicker shad package the dive curve chart however I'm not sure if I agree with it. The one thing it does not state is lure speed which is basically boat speed. Most of us will troll from 1.5-2.5 mph. Obviously the faster you troll the deeper the bait will dive and if to fast the bait will not track properly. Also the FS lure size will determine the depth of the lure along with the type of line. I use trilene XL 10 lb test. First off let me say this was my first time pulling boards on Bago and I'm fairly new to using boards. The time before this I was on Lake Wisconsin for three days. I have used flicker shads, shad raps and fat raps for years without them. I like the idea of being able to get the lines out away from the boat and the other obvious advantages of using boards to troll with. However when on LW the place is full of snags and I was only allowing about 20-25' of line behind the board. It worked well to catch fish in 8-10 fow and eliminated most of the snags. On Bago the dept is a little deeper in areas we would troll these kind of baits so I get letting some extra line out. Less snags than I'm use to so letting out more line is a no brainer. However 100'+ seems kind of extreme to me when trolling at these speeds. Maybe I'm looking at it all wrong and correct me if you'd like. But the lure dive curve chart IMO is inaccurate from my experience fishing in 8-10 fow. It seems that the chart could use trolling speeds added to it. Last week I had maybe 50' behind the board on Bago and caught fish in 15+ fow. I guess they might have been suspended or we were trolling faster than normal. It was not my boat so I'm not sure on the speeds however I was the one setting up the boards. After catching a bunch of small non-eye fish I did put on a #5 blue glass shad and caught both of my eye's. I attribute it to possibly the dive curve of that lure vs the flicker shad however both run at similar depths. For those of you letting out a specific amount of line behind your boards do you do this with all of your cranks or do you adjust depending on how deep the lures will run? Sorry for the long winded post. I think this kind of info will help those who have not been as successful as others out on the water using these techniques. Also it seems that some of you let more line out and others are running less line. In my case it seems that I'm not letting enough line out but as I stated earlier I'm new to boards and just trying to get it dialed in. I love using these and still have a lot to learn and appreciate all replies. Thanks in advance for all the reports, tips, comments and the time you LLer's share with all of us!!! I truly love this forum and have learned a ton. Thanks again. Vince

i would not hesitate to run the #4's, early on. we have been running 4,5 and 7's. with each catching numbers daily. if the 5's are not getting hit very often, run 1 side of the boat with 4's and the other with 5's. see what they want that day. have had several days were we had to down size to get the walleye to snap. also had recently were we had to run 7's to keep the mighty whities and groaners off our baits and give the eyes a chance to hit. just my .02 hope it helps. it also looks like alot of the single packs are not coming with a dive chart anymore. why?. but every 3 pack or pro pack has one in it everytime. have bought from 4-5 retailers recently and have only had dive charts in the 3 packs. i belive you can find them and download or print them from berkleys website also. forgot my charts one time and looked it up on the phone out on the lake. been running 25 ft back in 7-8ft on a #5, and 50ft back on a #4 in 7-8ft of water for a reference.

Thanks guys, it turns out the dive chart is also inside the packaging. Wow, i'm a doink. Does anyone use the #4 flicker shads for eyes on bago? or is that too small?

z71, I/we use #5 Flicker Shads most of the time when we're trolling for walleye, whether with clients or in tournaments. Ex: Running them on boards on 10# test, with 50ft. of line out, attach the board and they run at 10 feet. Just an example, to maybe use as a guideline. If I find my book, I'll PM you with more information. Hope this helps you a little. Take care and tight lines.
