Rod Holders

Okay I bought 2 of the flush mount Ram rod holders. Now I have to drill holes in my gunwale to mount them. Does anyone have any idea how thick that fiberglass is? What screws will be the best for this attachment? I also need to drill a hole a little over an inch wide for the base pedestal to go in. Is a hole saw the best bet for this, or a drill bit. Someone also told me to cover the area with tape to prevent cracking. This is my first time poking holes into a fiberglass boat, and I don't want to screw it up.
smokey, check out the cabelas quick stow rod storage system, the item number is IK-013819 on there web site. i use mine almost every time out. keep my trolling rods in there or jig/rig rods depending on the day. will store upright and can hold 8 rods and goes into any seat base in the boat.
have 8 of the ram 2000's with flush mounts on my boat, have had them on 2 differant boats in the last 6 years and have had zero issues with them for trolling walleye and northern. the cogs are as perfect as the day they were new. i also like that they come with a longer shaft on the holder as it gets the rod up away from the gunnel of the boat to have more options of how the rods are positioned in the holders. well worth the extra few bucks for the rams. sold my last boat and left the flush mounts in and just ordered new mounts and kept the holders. good luck.
I'm looking to make a rod holders for my light tackle rods that I use for walleye and pan fish. I would like to make something, that looks good, so that I can store them in an upright position while I'm going from one spot to the next. I want to keep them off the floor and not cluttered in one corner of the boat. Would like a rod holder that could accommodate at least 6 rod. These would not be used for trolling. I have a 18 1/2 foot Crestliner Sportfish that has a walk through window. If you have some ideas would you include pictures.
My buddy has Ram holders on his boat and loves them, but I have the flush mount bases for my boat and like them for my boat. They are the Scotty (Cabelas) brand that I was able to get in white instead of the standard Scotty black. I have caught many salmon on mine and they hold up well. I did notice the cogs inside the mount socket are getting slighty worn and in big waves once the holder crept up and swung back but did not come out all the way. Might be time for a new white flush mount. Still, one holds my ten foot wire dypsey rod. I figure if they can take the torque of salmon hitting on that set up they've passed a big test. I have some metal tube mounts too, that hold my wire line/ pound ball rig. Once a fish hit snapping the rod right at the reel seat, sending the whole rig flying into the drink. Never let a newbie crank down on a star drag unsupervised....hard lesson learned.
I am looking at adding a track system to my 2011 Crestliner. I am looking at the Bert's product or the Traxtech. My question is this...I spoke with a boat dealer that handles the Traxtech and they use a very large rivet that he showed me without a backer plate.
Does anyone have this set up without the backer plate? The rivets look more than adequate to stand up to the wear and tear. NOt even sure how I would get a backer plate into the gunnel.
I'm not really looking for a trolling application, more so to handle live baits rigs for fall musky fishing.
thank you,
CK
I just recently purchased a alumacraft Nav 165 tiller and put in Bert's rod holders. Two 24" and two 6" rails coupled with two 6" riser universal rod holders and two rod tube type holders. Yup their expensive, but they are worth every penny because of their quality. Just my opinion.
