I own 2 male labs(black) and one female (yellow). They all hunt awesome. The older male is a master hunter and will fetch anything and go all day all week. The female needs more rest but still is excellent. She prefers to hunt pheasents rather then ducks. I kept one male from the last litter and he is coming along but has trouble with bigger birds. The next one will be another male just because of the stamina. They all are family dogs. It really comes down to what you want your dog to do and then train. Will have a litter this summer. We can't wait.
I myself have had much better luck with my female, she is much more focused and intense when she gets birdy. My Male GSP does not stay focused as well and always seems interested in scents of other dogs and always has a need to mark on anything. He knows what to do but does not have the concentration level that my female has. If and when I get another dogs I will definately go with another female. My male has tons of energy but just doesn't work the field as well and keep his nose where it needs to be.
And that may just be my ADD boy, maybe he needs ridalin?
I would half to disagree! I have a 8 month old male lab that has not once had an accident in the house. But my friend bought a female from the same litter of pups i got my male from. After about 2 months of training we took them out goose hunting his was only 40 lbs and mine was about 60lbs. when we shoot one we let them both go and his dident want any thing to do with the bird and mine got it for me each time! not saying females arnt as good hunters but i feel that males have a larger drive. and as far as house pets my male sleeps with me every night and is great with kids!
I currently own my 3rd and 4th female labs, mother and daughter. My buddy has the father and a son of the pair. I will NEVER own a male dog! Beside pissing on everything they can find, if they are not fixed you absolutely can not hunt them with a female in heat. His two rock heads could care less about birds or how many times you burn them with the collar, their mind is on one thing and one thing only. Sure, my two will go into season twice a year, usually during the fall and spring, but they do it together and will still hunt through it. ..........just me 2 cents.........
I have 2 females(mother and daughter) and will always have females. I think a lot is the bond that you develop with them growing up, but my girls love to work for me and are the most affectionate animals in the house for me, my wife, and my boys. Plus I loved having puppies, something you can't do with a male.
Oh boy PP&PB are you going to open a can of worms! I am on my third GSP (all females). I simply started with a female because I hunted over my buddies female GSP and she always did well in the field. Today I understand that she did well because she was a well trained dog, not just because she was a female. Regarding males...........for several years my neighbors male golden retriever would come over and pee on anything on the ground, laundry basket, laundry basket with clean clothes, lawn chairs, lawn tractor, you name it and he pee'd on it. I have grown accustom to having females around the house and love 'em.
