I have a 7 month old yellow lab and I need to build her an insulated dog house for outdoors.  Does anyone have any plans or ideas on how to begin?

I have seen people make a outdoor dog house out of old chest freezer where the top flips up. Remove any and all electrical and refrigeration components. Cut a hole as an entrance but make sure all metal and sharp edges are cover. I like the idea of sectioning off the entrance. Some type of door or canvas cover over the door. The top will flip open to clean the inside. Good luck and tell us what you do.

Most of the time folks are making a dog house a mansion.  Heck, I'm told my dogs got cable???

Truth is you can build a house with one sheet of plywood, and a single 8' 2x2. Filled with straw, or hay, and about any size dog is going to stay warm in the coldest temps. I've seen 70lb dogs use these houses no problem.  I made a bunch up for guests, and for the dogs when on runs.

In my kennel,  I'm like everyone else. I build them with 2x4 walls,  and full insulated. Roof comes off but also has a 2x4 blocked and insulated drop down. At 3'x4'. These are very heavy! A bit big for one dog. I usally double up though.

Pics are of a kennel house, I'l have to find or take one of a guest house.

Sounds good to me.  Everything put together mentioned should get me a well constructed house.

Thanks for the help.

I would suggest also building it so you can lift the roof off.  It makes cleaning the house easier in the spring and adding bedding if you wish in the fall.  Also helps you maintane  the house as well sealing/caulking etc. Plus building one like this you are able to insulate the roof even more.

snjkaiser made some good points. Here are a couple pictures I found online. I like the idea of dividing the house so the wind doesn’t whip through it. You can build it however you want but remember to keep the bedding dry. OR buy a K9 Condo Dog Den. I have 3 of them and they are great! www.k-9kondo.com/products/Dog-Den-2%2C-Regular.html and you can add the heater if you like.

Just a couple of things to keep in mind when you build your house. Do not build it too large-its more area to keep warm with body heat. Make the doorway just large enough  for the dog to get into.I build mine with 6 inch legs under it and make it so the floor inside is 5-6 inches lower than the opening,so the bedding stays inside. If you are close to Mauston I would be glad to build one for you-Just supply material
