Pointing Lab has blasto; What to do?
6/29/11 @ 6:10 PM
I was wondering if anyone had dealt with dogs that was diagnosed with blastomycosis. I don't know where my dog Mya specifically got it, but it was so bad she couldn't walk anywhere and she's 1.5 years. We took her to the vet and now she's doing better but I was just wondering what special treatments you give to your dog with blasto to help them recover. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Biggie

My buddie's black and tan "Boo" got it in Oconto County. The medication burned her eyes and made her lose her vision. She lost her vision, but still remained an excellent hunter. He thought he would make her a leather cap to protect her head as she ran through the woods. I guess he didn't need to. She ran away during a snow storm and was gone for two weeks. He thought she was dead , but found her at the Oconto County Humane Society. The family that found her never knew she was blind. Very sad situation, but she made the most out of it. Too bad he didn't get those steroid eye drops to help her keep her vision.
Wish the best for your lab? Sorry about the sad story.
Satelite.....Blastomycosis is a Fungi infection that is usually acquired by inhaling the spores of Fungus from wood or soil. It's more commonly found in soil. It is rare to acquire the disease but if the immune system is compromised, risks are even greater. It is most common in sporting dogs that are under 5 years of age. Our 1.5 year old Lab (knucklehead) at the time got into some mouse poison at a relatives house last fall, her immune system was altered during the "flush out" and the fact she likes to throw some dirt around occasionally....she contracted the spores (we believe).
my lab had blasto when he was a year and a half and we kept him on the pills for 6 months like the vet said and now 2 years later he is doing great at 93 lbs. a very scary situation to see a dog you spend so much time and money on training go down hill so fast. lots of blasto horror stories out there. hope everyone's dogs recover as well as mine did.
Biggie.....we get our Meds from an Arizona supplier. Even cheaper than Canadian suppliers. I don't know the web address off hand but i will find out. Our Haylie is currently on Itraconazole....runs about $100 a month. Fluconazole was the first med she was on but it was insufficient. Any issues with the eye's?....Haylie was near-blind for almost a week in the beginning. Since than, Steroid and Fluconazole eye drops restored the vision to adequate levels. Permanent scarring did occur on the pupil's thou. She will never have fully restored vision. This fungi inection is just bad news.
Thanks guys for all your help, it kills me just seeing my lab go through this. What I'm afraid of is that she'll take a long time to recover. I don't know what level she is at but its not good. I think the meds are doing her good, but its a slow process. And yes the meds are extremely expensive and if I can order them from Canada for cheap, I think I'll give it a shot. Thanks guys.
My10 year old lab had blasto several years ago. The medication was very expensive. After months of treatment he was fully cured.
After finding out how much the meds were going to be we went to canadadrugsonline.com. We saved over 80% from what Walmart and walgreens were priced at.
If you have a prescription you can fax it to them.
Good luck.
Hang in there Biggie...there's hope but no guarantees. Our 2 year old Female Black has been fighting Blasto for about 9 months now. She's been on a upswing the last few months. As Caz mentioned....it has not been a smooth road at all. On a severity level.....she first tested at 33, a few months later see dropped to a level of 31. Any #'s over 10 are considered bad. Her next re-test is in a few weeks. PM me anytime Biggie for any information.
