hey guys, im looking for a new hunting dog but im not sure what breed. i had a lab for 14 years and the family doesnt want another one. too many memories i guess. im leaning towards a spaniel but am a little concerned about temperament. i dont want another crazy house dog.(my lab was nutz!) im looking to train on pheasants but would luv a dog that could do some shed hunting with me. any suggestions? i would luv to hear from a breeder/trainer in south-east WI.

Sort of unconventional but look into an Airedale Terrier. They're the largest of the terrier breeds. They were originally bred to be hunting dogs in England. I know that one of the breeders in my area hunts pheasants with hers. They're very intelligent and I'm betting that they'd be good as shed hunters as well. Here's a link to a good article about them in Gun Dog Magazine.

The personalities between our last dog which was a Lab and our Airdale are way different but both have/had their strengths. Both are/were very lovable and smart dogs. I feel somewhat guilty for saying this but I don't miss vacuuming every other day. If your hunting dog is also a house dog, note that Airedales don't shed.
How about an American Water Spaniel? Dale Creek Gundogs American Water Spaniels SE Wisconsin litter on the ground you could go look at.
