Getting pumped up for our trip to Indian Lake, just north of Ignace. This will be the 30th year. My Dad's been my patner every year. He turns 85 this fall so I've had to take it easy on the exploring and get him back to camp if it gets rough. not sure how many more he's good for, but as long as he's willing, I'll take him.

I thought he was planning to drop out a few years back when he was getting pounded in rough water, but I got a bigger boat and now he's ridin high!

Looking back, it seems like it should be boring going to the same lake for this long, but we know it better than Wisconsin lakes and we always do well on Walleye and get our fair share of lakers. The old man starts looking forward to "toddy time" about half an hour after shore lunch. If I get to that age, and can still knock back a few gins and talk smart, then I'll be happy too. Smile

FYI to anyone going this direction.  Some of the best fishing in 40 years this trip, weed beds were back on some of the lakes, Heathwalt in particular.  This  was also the worst drive to, and the worst landing area, definitely need 4 wheel drive.   The trip to the northend wasn't bad.  One of the beaver damns has been drained, the others weren't bad.  Only problem was there was already 5 trucks & trailers left from campers.  Our group had 5 and probably 3 or 4 more from Rousseau's arrived.   I did find out that the road that leads to the north from the parking area is an old camp ground which would make excellent parking for those spending the night or nights camping on the lake to park.

Heading up to this area in 3 weeks, was wondering if anyone has fished this area this year?

Did a reunion trip to ARO and Indian Lake the last week in September. Our group started fishing out of Gummeson's 40 years ago, switched to Agimac River Outfitters when Harold and Isobel St Cyr owned it, then drifted away when the new owners came on board. Returned 4 years ago and then this September. Probably won't be going back. The docks were in very poor shape; very tippy and unstable. The owners don't seem to trust or appreciate their customers..

Not that the fishing was bad, quite the opposite. Caught many walleyes between 18" and 27", primarily in 16 to 40 ft of water. Get any deeper and the eyes got much smaller. Several northerns over 36" (all released). Only caught 1 laker, jigging. Couldn't find them deep, and pounded the spawning areas casting, with no luck

Weather wan't cold. but we didn't see the sun either. Rained all day for 2 days, and for part of 3 other days. Over all, it was a good trip with good friends and good fishing. Never regret a trip to Canada, but our future trips will probably be in the Armstrong or Nakina area. Indian Lake will be for the memories. - BFG

Just wondering if anybody has been up here this year yet.  Curious on what the water levels are like.  Heading up in a week.  Thanks.

Just returned from a week in the Ignace area. Fishing was good to spectacular depending on lake and species targeted. We fished Indian, Heathwalt, Kukukus, Moosehide (for northerns and walleyes) and Ralaigh (for trout). The 325 road was in good condition to Dome Lake. Wash boards on the hills but other than that is was good. Doreen Road was good, but looks like the logging is all done and the road doesn't appear to have been graded this year. On Indian we found walleyes from 17-30 fow on mid-lake humps early and late in the day. Most fish seemed to be in the 17-19 inch range with an occasional 21-23 inch. Largest walleye was 24 inches. Caught a dozen or so northerns while walleye fishing with the largest being 31 inches. Fishing on Heathwalt good to great. Walleye and perch were snapping at times. Walleyes were mainly 13-15 inch fish with an occasional larger fish. Did not target perch but caught some while walleye fishing. NOTE: road to Heathwalt SUCKS! Bring spare everything for your trailer. Kukukus was good to great. We were there 2 days. One day zero wind. Second day wind was a ripple out of the East. So the conditions were poor. That being said we caught tons of small walleyes with a 15-16 inch fish about every 10th fish. On the second day the wind picked up for about 2-3 hours and we had a nice chop out of the NE. We found a school of 16-18 inch fish with a bigger one thrown in about every 5th fish...the largest being 22 inches. An added bonus was a 38 inch pig of a northern. We also threw spinner baits in the weeds as a change of pace and caught a million small northerns and a few 18-22 inch smallies. Easy 150-200 fish day (10 AM-5 PM) for three of us when you combine walleyes, northerns and smallies. Moosehide was amazing as always. No small walleyes...most fish in the 17-19 inch range with about every third fish being 20-22 inch fish. Largest was a 25.5 inch walleye. Ralaigh was OK for trout. We went out for an afternoon and found trout in 30-45 fow. Got limits and a handful of more trout very easily, but the largest fish was only 16 inches. Last year we fished Victoria to get out trout limits. We got our limits and that was about it. However all the trout we caught were definitely larger with a few in the 22-24 inch range. All in all, a very successful August trip. Will return June 14-21, 2015. Cheers!

@ BFG> Are you going to take a run over to Mameigwess and cast for Lake Trout? There have been some really huge ones coming out of there recently.

Returning to ARO late Septemder after fishing other areas for the last four years. Hoping for many eyes and maybe the lakers will be moving shallow. I know Indian better than most lakes at home, just hope it hasn't changed much. BFG

Another trip come and gone, back to planning and dreaming for next year! We were there the week of July 13-20, it ended up being a somewhat off yr for us due to the weather being behind. Weedbeds were just starting to come up most places, but still sparse, and they'd just had a mayfly hatch. Fish were really scattered! Still managed to catch some fish for supper each evening, and some to take home, but nowhere near the numbers we've become accustomed to. Most disappointed in not catching many smallmouth, we don't specifically target them usually, but pick up a lot of incidentals trolling. Always fun! The smaller pike were getting very aggressive the later part of the week, and still some bigger ones to be found. Did manage to land my 1st lake trout this yr(3rd time was a charm!), and I must say, they are excellent table fare off the grill! A few new PB's for the group, and as usual a great time with a good group of guys, so still a great trip in my book! Sorry this is a little late, had it typed up earlier in the week and the PC locked up, brain must have too as I forgot all about it! Good luck to those heading up!

Less than 24hrs before blast off! Report from ARO is a few mayflies present, nothing heavy, and some bigger fish are still being caught! New personal bests this yr?! One can always dream! Tight lines and safe travels to all!

We had surface water temp from 63-68 degrees. No sign of may flies on our June 15-22. Weeds were just getting started. Seems like things are still a couple weeks behind.
