November 21, 1864 Mrs. Bixby-

Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts, that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours, to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

- A. Lincoln -

Please take time out this weekend to remember and give thanks for the veterans who have fought to protect our way of life.

Well said Pool.. Can't thank our Veterans enough for the lives we get to live. Hope all the families who are remembering a vet today who made the ultimate sacrifice, find peace and know this country is grateful.

I hope everyone takes a bit of time to remember the people that gave their lives for our way of life today.

On a side note,  as dividend as this country seems to be , I also hope that it's remembered that someone with an opposite view of yours died so you could have that opposite view.

Spent the day with dad who lost a buddy or 2 when he served - as I tell him & any other vet I meet 365 days a year whether they are past or present serving in the Armed Services - and anyone on this site that served or is serving - Thank You For Your Service 🇺🇸 . To a 30+ year family friend who is struggling to survive from the effects of war & doesn’t understand why he’s being Thanked For His Service , I pray for him today & everyday . Today , Memorial Day I also say Thank You For Your Service to both my Grandpas , Uncles that have passed and every other person that gave their lives for this country .  🇺🇸

The city of New London Fire Department, American Legion, Amvets, New London High School band, Scouting American and Cub Scouts did a great  Memorial Service in New London.  Hope I did not miss anyone.
Thanks to all who presented and attended.

So many young men and women gave their lives to protect our country and the flag they pledged their allegiance to.  They didn’t pledge allegiance to the left or right as many do today.

As previously well noted by several LL’ers, very difficult for those Veterans that survived while buddies were cut down alongside them in recent wars.  I can only imagine what survivors of the Civil War felt like as the years and decades clicked by.

God Bless America and our Veterans “passed” and present!

“Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.” — Unknown

Many great quotes on this thread. The one above is one of my favorites.
