Hi guys. I'm headed out to Colorado for a high altitude Elk hunt this Sept. We will be traveling by horse and spiking out for a week. Due to the horses, we have space and weight limitations. I was hoping I could get some help on what food to take and any good recipes you may have come across. There will be pots and pans in camp and water is not a issue. The outfitter packing us in told us to "bring the good stuff" when we talked about food. He stated you can hunt hard if your not eating right. So with that...I'll take any advise you may have. Thanks. JD

Great ideas guys. I have a food saver so I'll be sure to use the freeze and cook method. Keep the ideas coming guys. These are great ideas. JD

A few ideas from my Alaska trip & numerous BWCA trips... Substitute tortillas for bread. Lighter weight, indestructable. Keep eggs in the shell, but buy farm fresh eggs - not from the store - you never know how fresh they are. As long as the eggs are kept cool, they'll stay for a couple of weeks. Freeze some bacon, steaks, pork chops, etc. Wrapped in you sleeping bag for the trip out, then kept in the shade, they'll stay frozen for a while. If I think of more, I'll chime in. WindLaker

You can pre-cook and freeze anything you like in vacuumed packed bags and cook in water. We did lasagna, chili, soups, chow mein. With the chili and soups you just freeze it first then once frozen transfer it to vacuum packed bags. For breakfast we pre-made breakfast burritos and wrapped them up in tinfoil. To cook them just set them on top of a fire for a couple minutes and you're good to go. We also pre-made omelettes and vacuumed packed them. Mountain house meals aren't terrible and if you can get your hands on MRE's they sure are nice to have in the pack if you're hunting hard and don't go back to camp for lunch. Good luck, its a blast.

We'll be taking sealed coolers up with us on day 1 on the horses. The outfitters is scheduled to bring us some fresh water on day 3 we are thinking of having him keep some food frozen for us and haul it up on day 3. I've heard about cracking eggs into a washed out peanut butter jar. Apparently they pour out 1 at a time perfect. I've heard about preparing a spagehetti sauce mix in a freezer bag and taking it up frozen. Cooking it by dropping the bag in boiling water. The peanut butter/bacon treat sounds absolutely disgusting...but I'll give it try one of these days. I like the protein it would provide. What else have you guys got? Sept can't get here fast enough. Cooked bacon and peanut butter on bagels. Sounds gross, but they are awesome. And they keep for a couple of days.
