"For all the bear around these days you would think the tag system would be a little more generous than it is.When is the the state going to adjust according to the booming populations? " The real problem is the number of people applying. From 1998 till 2008 the amount of hunters putting in for a tag has doubled. From 2008 till now it has grew even more. I think with the decline of successful hunters the last few seasons the DNR is taking the right approach. Hopefully the results of the on going population study help in determine what out population even is.

Zone C does not have a booming bear population.  30% success rate is poor.

Anyone know of any baiting bear guides in C?  Mainly just looking for someone that has property and can maintain baits, and is reputable.  I could supply stands, if necessary, and self sufficient otherwise.  Thanks.  If I had time to run back and forth to maintain baits , I would, but I won't this coming year.

edit: And by reputable I mean just someone passionate about their hunter being successful, but in the end there is no guarantee.  I will likely be passing my tag to my 10yo son, and don't have any expectation that he has to shoot anything, or see something, as it's hunting and I know that.  Just want someone giving us a chance with putting the time in.  Don't care if it's a backwoods small operation by one guy, a small family, or something more known.  Just want to have a good time, enjoy the outdoors with my boy and hopefully have success.

My boy has had a great first season, with a spring turkey hunting hard 5 of the seasons, shot his first deer, a doe during Oct hunt, and his first buck during gun season.  He's really passionate about it, and puts a lot of time in if that's what it takes.  He sat in stand all day gun hunting.  Makes it easy on me, not hoping that he wants to go.  Pretty soon he's gonna like girls soon, so gotta take advantage of the time I got...

There's thousands of acres of public off of 173 before you get to Babcock that I plan on trying if my efforts to get on private fail. There are logging roads going through it and people cutting wood, hunting, and just messing around out there though. I'm not sure how much that affects bear movement. I don't want people messing with my bait and I wouldn't trust a trail cam out there either. Also, at a certain point the roads get dug out so people can't drive back too far. To get far enough away from people it might be rough to carry bait far into the swamps. I don't know what areas the bears use, and if I start baiting out there will they eventually come to it? Those are my dilemmas.

Thanks for the info though. That confirms my decision on where to hunt if I have to go public.

I saw one cross 173 before the cranberry marsh on my way to Babcock Thursday afternoon. Cool. I think thats all private land there.

I live in the Nekoosa area and (hopefully!) will be getting a tag for Zone C in 2012. If anyone wants to help a first timer out with land to hunt I'd appreciate it. I know the bear population in Wood County isn't all that high, but they're around. I'd rather hunt private than have yokels messing me up on public. PM me if you wanna help. Big Smile

I am looking towards the 2012 bear season and I am looking for some land, I would prefer private, otherwise some secluded public land east of Wausau, preferably within 45 min. of Shawano. I don't know if anyone else is planning on going in that area next year or know of any good spots, if you do or want to talk just send me a message.
