Bass Fishing
Where do they go?!
4/29/12 @ 11:39 AM
lately the bass have been biting really good while flipping fallen timber later in the day in the backwaters of our local flowage. However, whenever I try fishing the same spots with the same black and blue jigs in the morning I cannot even get as much as a bite. Does anybody have a clue where the bass travel in the morning? Thanks!

wood holds heat very well and with that being said if the sun is beating on it all day that log is going to be nice and warm for that bass to lay next to and if that timber is connect to the ground its going to hold heat well also cause the ground is going to be warmer then the water. Now if theres any aluminum in the area like a pier the fish will hold on that in the morning cause that heats up fast. if theres nothing else around the fish are just not going to bite cause there feeding time is in the afternoon or if theres points nearby the fish might be sitting there to feed in the morning. throw a reaction bait on that point. good luck

With the cold evenings, the fish are most likely in or very near the same areas but simply inactive. As theimer said, just fish later in the day, they will turn on as the water warms in the afternoon. If you want to try catching them in the morning, slow down and downsize. My go to bait for cooler water and inactive fish is a jig with a pork trailer. Work it tight to the cover and S L O W L Y.
they might go to deeper water during the morning. but they probably might not have the energy in morning to feed or to digest the food and wait for the water to warm up to feed. try to down size in the morning you might have more luck. a spot i pan fish at ice out in the morning you might catch one or two but if you wait until a couple hours before sunset. when the water is at its warmest you will catch 200 percent more fish.
With the water temps where they are the fish are cruising, feeding and looking for bed areas. With the cold fronts we have been experiencing the fish I have found have been pushed back to the nearest break near deep water. Use a map and your locator to find the breakline and work a zig-zag pattern along it until you contact the fish. Slowly drag a crank or toss an X-rap or tube. Good luck.
