I prefer to use rubber roof liners. They conform to the hole you dig, traction isn't a real big issue, you can slope them so you dont have dead critters floatin and they allow you to make one side deeper than the other to help during dry periods.

Yup it wore off after 3 years. Should have repainted it but now that its full again you cant see it anyway. Deer don't seem to mind.

I put out a kids water pool 3 years ago. 15 bucks at fleet farm. Painted it black so it wasnt so obnoxious looking. In march i took advantage of the decent temps and finally dug it into the ground. Its on a slopes I can come around the backside, where we have attached a 2 foot pipe with a plug to drain it if we ever feel the water is really nasty. Have plenty of pictures of deer drinking out of it. Cheap and easy. If i had to do it again I would just cut a 55 gallon barrel in half our something but this works too. Put a stick in it for the squirrels and chipmunks to get out.

Good observation P&Y. Plastic containers don't offer much traction for small feet.

it would be a good idea to put some sort of log or stick in there for small critters to climb out on. Rotten chipmunks may keep the deer away.
