IMO, if a person is saying they won't use one because the smell has spooked deer I have to question why they don't think that the deer smelled THEM...oh yeah, the person was wearing Scent Blocker and that is 100% affective...
The only reason I would not use one, turkey hunting, deer hunting, cat fishing, or any other outdoor activity would be if I forgot it that day.
First time I used one while bow hunting I dropped it from top of ladderstand. It kept on working as I could see the vapor coming out of it on the ground. (5 min after it dropped the skeeters were swarming me!) 45 min later a deer came down a trail through the heavy brush behind my tree. When it got directly downwind @ 20 yrds it stopped. Made a 90deg turn and slowly walked up behind the trunk of the tree I was leaning on. Stretched it's head around the trunk and spent several minutes loudly sniffing the vapor still rising out of the device. I would use a thermacell even when no bugs around, light it and hang it upwind of trail, in bow range, it brings em in.
I've used my Thermacell bow hunting during the early season and it really works, I can see it smoking when its on, and can also smell the fumes it leaves,I have not seen any deer when i was use'ing the thermacell, but i cant blame that on the thermacell for sure, I under stand now they even have scent that burns in the themacell, has anybody tried that? would be nice to know how that worked.
I used a thermacell last year for the first time bear hunting right after labor day. The bugs were absolutely horrendous but within a few minutes of turning on the thermacell the bugs disappeared. That was the first time I've ever been in the woods in short sleeves without getting bit by bugs and the odor didn't seem to bother deer or bears.
Been using one for several years while turkey hunting and deer hunting. Never noticed a deer take notice. Just picked up a new one for half price. Thought it was just another gimmick, but one trip to the woods made me a believer. I've literally sat down in a cloud of skeeters and within a few minutes there wasn't one left near me.
