A discussion on when the rut occures is not meaningless. Some guys think it happens durring a 4 day window each year and that 4 day window shifts around within a 14 day window. Others think it happens on and off over the course of 10, 8, or 6 weeks. How big of an impact does weather make? How about the moon? There are a ton of factors that affect the timing of the rut where you hunt, and some of those factors are very local.
Has anyone else used trail cameras to discover when the fawns are dropped then count back 200 days? I did this and I was surprised by how far apart does drop fawns and therefore how far apart does get bred. It seems that last year most of the does on my property in northern WI got bred in late October, and some were late November. Anyone else do this?
but with the bucks are ready to go as soon as they peel their velvet. it all depends on the does. So with the 2nd full moon being so late this year, and none of the bucks being able to find a receptive doe i would have to think they are going to be on there feet searching alot longer and not locked down until almost gun season.
for me it doesn't matter, All i have to work is 6 days in November and i have the last 8 days off in Oct. So i'm holding out for a 4 1/2 year old or better. But if you watched deer& deerhunter, they think it going to be one of the best ruts ever, because the 2nd moon is so late this year. Since they are predicting a trickle rut which should mean that the bucks are going to be on there feet looking for hot does for a much longer period than normal. which should in return have him walk right in front of ME.
I don't know if anyone reads Deer & Deer Hunting, but their rut forecast was in their October issue. The author based his forecast off 14 years of research done in Vermont. He predicts the peak rut will be the last week and a half in November, around the 21st. Activity will pick up in late october, but the full out craziness won't start until mid November. Also the rut won't be like most, this years rut will be more like a trickle rut, with a more prolonged period of rutting activity Again, his research is based of the moon cycle and research done in Vermont.
The author has done a ton of research, but I don't think I will base my vacation days on his rut forecast. But it will be interesting to keep his forecast in mind and find out for myself whether he was correct or not.
For me, I've always had my best luck around the 2nd week of November, but unfortunately I lost that spot, so now I gotta start over and make a new journal.
I think that with the first night of the full moon on the 22nd of october, the six days prior to that it will start. With the last week in Oct. and the first week of Nov. being prime time for the all day sits.Atleast thats the way its been on my land anyway, However i do also have a pretty strong second rutt by me that goes past the last day of bow. Have had active scrapes and chaseing the last weekend of bow for the last few years.(pretty cool)
