Help on a new plow set up
10/31/11 @ 10:18 PM
Have a small Polaris 330 so putting on a small 52" plow. Want help on winch options. Heard that there has been some issues with Warn but don't know if the issues have been fixed. I need a winch that I can lock out so I can only lower the plow a bit in big snow as I'm limited with it only being a 330. Using it for plowing on the lake. Found a full plow kit for $357.

warn winches are the best on the market and usually have the least problems but are twice the price if not more than the off-brand names that hopefully for 1/2 the price will last as long, but doubt they will. I'd try a cheaper brand like you did and see if it lasts a long time. If not, you just wasted 100-150 bucks and go get a warn winch next time, much more dependable overall. Hope you get lucky and the one you bought will last as long though.
Heard some issues on some of the warn winches so that's why I'm wondering. I'll mainly be plowing on a lake for ice fishing and we had so much snow last year I will probably be having to do it in more than a few passes. Wasn't sure how winches work under the plow weight. So I guess most must have an internal lock out. Was a bit rough walking around last year. I hole hop all day chasing perch so much easlier if I have a somewhat clear path. Hours of hole hopping in deep snow is getting too much when you're covering an area half a football field. Decided to sell my shanty in favor of a this plow set up. Thank you for the help
Don't under-estimate your Polaris. I don't personally own an atv, but I've plowed snow with my brother's Suzuki 250 before. It's only a two wheel drive with chains on it, and it does great...unless the snow is 2 ft deep and wet of course, then anything is gonna struggle. I would think any winch you use is gonn be able to do what you want it to. If you're trying to stop the blade part way down, you could simply raise it up a touch after it goes down..?...but don't most have momentary switches for just the reason you're looking at? The winch certainly wouldn't continue to spool cable out unless you're holding the "down" button would it?
Not familiar with your set up, would think a 330 would be minimal for plowing, I put a warn rt-25 on one of our Honda s with 52 in plow.We use the winch regularly for mountain elk hunting and it performs flawlessly,,so should be no problem lifting a plow blade this year. warn is a pricey winch but a real workhorse..
