ATV Plow
10/15/12 @ 1:02 PM
I'm looking to put a plow on my ATV for winter this year and have a couple questions. I have 1/4mi dirt driveway with a couple open areas that I'm going to need to plow. I have a 2011 Sportsman 500 touring. I called the dealer I bought it from and he quoted me what looks like msrp if I were to buy all the parts myself. It was the glacier iii system with the 66" poly plow and a winch.
I have a few questions and will take any other advice anyone can give.
What size winch do you need for plowing?
How easy do the more universal plow kits mount up? Or are they universal but have model-specific mount kits?
Front mount vs center mount?
Any other insight would be appreciated.
Thanks, as always.

I have a Polaris 500 Sportsman with the Glacier plow. It works great and is VERY easy to put on and take off. You just drive over the plow until the end catches the mount. Then you hook up the winch and lift the plow until it latches. Your done. No crawling around putting in pins. Same process reversed to get it off. My trailer isn't wide enough for the rig and the plow so I pop it off and put it back on a lot.Mrt.
I know it's a little late but check out the atvsuperstore.com His name is Thor. He's all over the Polaris atv forums. I've bought parts from him and met him in person. Very nice guy. He will lead you in the right direction. Everything he sells, he's personally tested every part he has on his website. Good luck.
Just a side note, be careful when you are raising the plow with the winch. Make sure you let off the toggle as soon as the plow is up, otherwise you will bend the plow arms that attach underneath your 4 wheeler. The winch is strong and will continue to lift and bend those arms if you don't get off of that toggle fast enough. Good luck finding the right plow.
I put a plow on my Polaris last year. First, you have to get one that's at least as wide as your ride when the plow is at an angle. Did a bit of research before I bought mine and belly or frame mount is the way to go. Some new ones have a quick mount on the front suspension. Quick way to wear out some expensive parts. Once you have the mount on it's quick, 2 pins and attach the winch cable hook and away you go. Maybe takes me 2 min. Winch doesn't need much as plows are fairly light. You need to have a good battery and keep it on a tender. I bought mine on line and put it on myself. There's a place in Texas I'd stay away from. I had nothing but issues getting my plow. Won't buy from them again. Great price but service sucks. I bought the winch from Promark offroad and had one issue with it and they fixed as fast. Took me longer to get the winch connected and the wires ran than hooking up the rest. I plow my drive and trails out for ice fishing. Any questions pm me.
