FINALLY back out on the water today, after three weeks off because of family (and other) obligations and crappy windy/rainy/snowy weather. But it was a beautiful day to be out! A few Loons to keep me company and a few other boats. Finished up one of many projects so that was nice! Water temp averaged 41°F. Wind was gentle, water clarity not great. Threw a couple of snapshots of holes that might help some people interpret what that may see out there. The circular one has some weeds around it and it looks like weeds on the bottom of it. Followed the weed edge along the drop off in Warner Bay, heading towards Gov. Island. Marked a bunch of fish along it but didn't drop the camera down to see what they were because when I circled back they'd moved and I'd already put the camera and recording devices away for the day. I did see a couple Sheepshead in the area before putting the camera away. Then marked large schools on side scan as I headed around the bluff in about 20 FOW (panfish sized fish). Thanks also to the couple of guys that offered to help me launch and trailer the boat! No piers in yet but water levels up a lot from earlier. Right now on the county site it shows it's at the summer maximum level. WHAT???!!! Note also, if you launch from the far left side it's tough (16'9" Fish/Ski boat). Couldn't get in far enough to float the boat off the trailer, and it's not level there. One fender was where it normally should be to float the boat off, but the other side was higher, so it wouldn't float off.
Snuck out later this afternoon off Warner again. It was beautiful out there, nice and calm. Water temp showed 44°F in Warner Bay. Had light sprinkles for a bit, then as I was getting ready to call it a day it started raining harder. Didn't see all the carp today, some obviously but also marked schools of panfish size fish. Guessing White Bass but I didn't try to see what they were. Was going to take a quick peek after I was done with my project but then the rain came. Next time!
Out in the wind again this morning. Ran into a massive amount of Carp in about 16 FOW off Warner Park. The snapshot shows a small portion of what was out there. Tried dropping the camera down to positively identify them but the entire water column was completely churned up. Black on the bottom, no light penetration. On 2D sonar the whole screen was filled with crap. But water temp was 40.9°F, slightly warmer then it's been. Hopefully next trip will have calmer water!
Shore fished various areas on the south and west side of Mendota last night for a couple hours. Just used a shiner with a small split shot and slowly retrieved it bouncing off the bottom. Very slow retrieve. Had 4 hits and caught 3 of the fish. All bites were so soft I could barely notice them. Kept the 19" fish.
