Fence Lake

Vilas County - Wisconsin

Fence Lake is a 3,483 acre freshwater lake located in Vilas County, Wisconsin. As part of the Lac du Flambeau Chain, water drains from the Fence Lake basin into Crawling Stone Lake via a connecting channel. Bolton Creek flows into Fence Lake at the midpoint of the eastern shore. The creek and springs scattered throughout the basin are Fence Lake's main water sources. Most of the shoreline is developed and privately owned but heavy forest cover offers scenic beauty.

Fence Lake is known for its crystal-clear waters and is a popular destination for fishing and recreational boating. The lake is home to a variety of fish species, including musky, walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass.

A single public boat launch along the western shore allows access to Fence Lake. The Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa owns the launch and the land around it. Resorts are scattered around the lake offering lakeside lodging and dining.

Fishing can be very intimidating for the angler. As one large "bowl" with very few sheltered bays, the lake becomes very rough when the wind blows. Even 5-10 mph winds can produce large waves. Use extreme caution when traveling the lake during windy periods.

What the lake lacks in shoreline features it is more than makes up for in underwater structures. Scattered humps, bars, and underwater points present unique fishing opportunities. Weeds though, are sparse, so rocks are more important here for locating fish. Due to the extremely clear water, fish stay deep during bright daylight, challenging the most experienced angler. Yet Fish populations are good, and once the angler understands the lake's secrets of successful outings are possible.

In addition to fishing and boating, Fence Lake also offers opportunities for swimming, waterskiing, and other water sports.

The surrounding area also offers many outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, biking, and snowmobiling. TheNorthern Highland-American Legion State Forestit is located nearby and offers several trails for hiking and cross-country skiing.

Overall, Fence Lake is a beautiful and popular destination for outdoor recreation in Wisconsin, offering a wide range of activities for visitors to enjoy throughout the year.
