I was fishing squash for a few days around Christmas. Caught a few northern and a few nice gills. I have fished this lake many times and it is always tough. Panfish are generally large, but few in number. Northern and LMB are abundant and both can be caught in good numbers through the ice if you stay near weed edges. There are too many bass and northern in this lake and we need to do better at talking our limit of those fish out. This should help the game fish grow.

Fished Squash today from 3pm till 6pm. It was sunny and clear skies. Air temp was 67. Water temps were 65-68. Caught a ton of fish. From the boat landing down the shore to the first point I caught 6 largemouth all 10-14 inches and 6 northern all hammer handles. I also got broke off twice instantly as I set the hook. I switched spots, same results. 4 largies and 5 northern and the same sizes as previous location. I moved to another area, I started off with 2 smallies, a 6 incher and a 13 incher. Then another hammer handle. I moved locations, an offshore rock/gravel hump, and same thing...2 cookie cutter largemouth a hammer handle and a break off. Last spot was around the big island. Started off promising with a decent 16 inch largie and a slightly smaller one, and a few more 10-14 inchers...and again....attack of the hammer handles. Lost count of how many but. it was ridiculous. Ended the day with around 15-20 largies, biggest was 16 inches, 2 small smallies, over 20 pike ALL hammer handles and a few break offs. Never caught this many pike here before and never this small. I’m talking like 14-18 inchers And never fished here without catching one plus size bass, till today. Oh well, will be back again. Only a handful of small bass on beds. 95% of beds vacant. A few gills in shallow but not all that many yet. Weeds are slowly coming up Fished mainly 2-15 feet of water, weeds, wood, docks. Didn’t see or catch anything big in shallow. Talked to some panfishers who had limited luck. Trying to figure the bigger bass in here!
P.S. I wont keep anything
