If anyone is going up from the Appleton area and wants to bring some back, message me. I'm snowed in at work. I love making the trip, but I don't see that happening this year.
Smelt in Ashland, Ashland County
|@ the lake|
We caught a couple hundred on the Wisconsin side last night!
There running here on the Michigan part of Lake Superior !!
update please! thanks
According to the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, someone pulled in a half bucket of smelt last night:
Anyone gonna try tonight?
Water is warming up to 41 degrees. Ideal temp is 42-44....
Anxious to hear some reports....
My best guess would be another week at the earliest. Not a local though. Do you siene or use dip nets? The pier for dip netting is boarded up and unusable as of 2 weeks ago.
I was looking for a little advice from locals or anyone else with a general prediction of when the smelt run will occur.
My family has been making an annual trip up to Ashland the last several years and with the late ice-out this year it is making it more difficult for us to plan our trip (5 hours from Appleton).
Is there any chance, with the current forecast, that the smelt will be running by this weekend? Or is it likely occur during the week next week and into the weekend?
Thanks for any advice or input
Considering there was a truck driving out today, I would think it will be a while. When I was out Sunday morning there was still close to two feet of solid ice. Unless there is some major warmth and rain, I would say at least two weeks until things are open.
