I will be venturing up to the northwoods this winter in the beginning of January. I have fished the Hayward area during summer/spring a fair number of times, but am not experienced with ice fishing the area. I was looking for some advice and places to fish to make my first ice fishing trip a success. We will be tip-up fishing mostly, targeting northern, bass, walleye, etc. Just looking for any information on some good lakes to fish that might pull some nice size and numbers. Thanks again.

Went out last night for a few hours. Caught 15 smallmouth and 1 largemouth and lost a 40+" musky. Most smallies caught on a jig and Gulp Leech. Most fish Were in the 14-17" range and the biggest was 18.5". I'm guessing they will be done spawning by the end of the week if the temps stay steady.

Went out last night from 4-7:30. Caught 12 smallmouth all in the 13-16" range. Couldn't find the big females. All fish came in 2-6' of water. Caught most of them on a 4" finese worm in dark grey color. Picked a few off their beds. I'm guessing by the weekend most fish will be up spawning.

Fished on Sunday 5/6 from 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM. Caught 18 SM & 2 LM between 2 of us. Most of our fish came from relatively small areas on the northwest end of the lake. Shallow (2'-6') water shorelines with scattered rocks seemed to be key. We pitched plastics exclusively and found that blue/black colors were also key. I was using a 4" finesse worm in junebug w/silver flecks while my buddy pitched a blue/black 4" tube jig on 5/16 oz head. Tried othefr plastics and other colors, but came back to the blue/junebug/black combos. Caught 1 nice SM swimming a 4" green/red grub, but that was it for "big sexy" & I was soon back to pitching my junebug finesse worm. All fish were between 13" & 15" with a 17 1/2" SM being our best fish of the day. We got soaked, but it was worth it. Had a great time!

Went out last night with a friend and did well fishing for smallmouth. We fished the north part of the lake and caught 20 smallies between the two of us. Several in the 16-18" range, biggest was 18 1/2". Had a few fish break us off as soon as we set the hook but don't know what they were. Feel a bite, set the hook and didn't even budge the fish. Will be back out again this week to try to find some more smallies. Also caught a bonus walleye on a crankbait just before dark.

Went out this morning from 5-9. Caught a few nice bluegills while walleye fishing, but no walleye. Then I switched to bass fishing and caught 15 largemouth and 1 smallmouth. Nothing huge but several around 15". I got turned around on the lake this morning, the fog was so think you couldn't seen shore from 50 feet away. First time that has ever happened to me. Will be out again after the heat wave.
