Late report from Tuesday. Sorry, been busy. Fished a couple places between south of Pepin and Wabasha a few hours on a nice day. Water quite high but you can fish from shore. Street to Bay City landing was closed so don't know if anything going there in backwaters. I got a few perch by last slough (Indian?) on Dike road with crawlers on bottom. But it was slow. Females spawned out. Lots of current. The other landings (Beef, etc) were gated closed. Saw one guy get a northern throwing minnow type lure at the first landing on other side of road, which was open. Rumor of perch by dam in Alma but can't verify. I'm sure the water will come up more with all the rain.
Went fishing Thursday. Canoed south off 25 canoe trail towards the Big Lake. Caught about 20 fish. Mainly northern with a few bass mixed in. Used frogs (didn’t seem to matter what brand) and the pike destroyed them. I had good luck for the bigger pike on a Johnson silver minnow with a twister hooked up to make it weedless. Lots of hits and probably only hooked 20 percent. I was looking for an island out there to camp on but didn’t have any luck finding a decent spot.
Planning to canoe off 25 down to the Big Lake area and possibly camp for a night. I have never done this before.. any advice on the route to take or any specific rules about camping I should know? Also, I fish for anything. I will most likely bring a panfish rod and a pike rod.
Also, what is the best map to use. I looked online but couldn’t find anything real nice to go off of.
Fished some backwaters of Chip yesterday. Perch were biting. Had to sort but kept a nice mess for a meal. Look for current. Some usual places toward Wabasha are still iced in. I did not go to Wabasha marina so don't know. But I did get into some perch on crawlers on the backwaters I fished. Biggest about 14. Lots of 8s and 9s. Tried to only keep males, more meat.
It is worth the drive just to see the eagles and ducks. Ice sheet between Maiden Rock and Stockholm dozens of eagles. Ducks all over in open water.
Looking for advice on fishing the backwaters for Perch and Northern. This would be for next ice season. Haven't fished this section before and i'm just looking where to start. Thanks

Stayed near the long walk during the weekend ice was sketchy. Someone put there foot through the ice on the way out. Fought a lot of yellow perch and crappy across from the alma school. Ice was thick but was getting sloppy.

Anyone know if the backwaters along 25 on the Nelson side have open water? Specifically in the Beef/Pontoon/Indian slough landing areas? Looking to get the kayak out there this weekend.
