Caught the first smallmouth of the season. Little guys but put up a great fight in the current. River water level is high after rain fall and super muddy but glad to hook into something. Caught with crankbaits

Not a report, I apologize. More an inquiry. I live right by Estabrook park and am wondering if you can wade the majority of the river past the falls.
Looking to fly fish for some smallies here and am not too knowledgeable on the Milwaukee River as I just move to MKE.
Any tips or recommendations are much appreciated.
Sorry to say but your about a month late to the party, I would say peak run was last week, there will still be fish moving up mostly smaller garnaraska strain that run into early may. Keep in mind that these fish enter the rivers in early February so any warm up will trigger spawning activity, last year late Feb we hammered talking 15 fish days on the root. Come April most fish had already come and gone. This years be real weird weather wise but I've been on fish last 4 weeks
Steelhead go before the suckers. I would assume the fish blew way upstream this year with all the high water.
46° - 50° F
Went last weekend, River was still high and cold. Tons of suckers with 0 steelhead caught or seen. From this weekend I could make the assumption and now with the weather we got today and yesterday we are at least a week till peak run.
Thanks for the input on line. I bought some berkley vanish 12# floro. I was going to replace the whole spool with it, but maybe I'll just add a 6ft leader out of the floro.
I run Sufix braid on my medium action spinning and then tie on a 3’-4’ leader of florocarbon with a float.
Or cast cleo on med heavy action rod in slower water deeper spots.
Mono 10 # xlt trilene low vis green long rod smaller the float the better. Get there early.
