With the vhs rules it seems like less stores are stocking herring. Last year Cabelas Germantown had some frozen bait. The packages were marked about defrosting and treating to kill vhs. What are the rules about frozen bait (smelt)?

Frozen fish CANNOT be used on any water other than where they were caught (EXCEPTION: frozen bait can be used on Lake Michigan and its tributaries upstream to the first barrier impassable to fish), unless they are first thawed and then preserved in a method that does not require refrigeration or freezing for long term storage. Other methods include, pickling in alcohol or mineral oil or drying in a salt/borax mixture.

I don't know if they get to 10" long, but the Lake Michigan Angler shop on the WI/IL border sells frozen baits for salmon fishing.  They are on the web and I am sure they could ship them to your house.

Hello, just asking to see if anyone knows where I am able to purchase large frozen bait like suckers, herring, Cisco, smelt. 10”+. Preferably online where they can just ship it to the house. Thanks in advance!
