I believe the river is closed for walleye and all gamefish until the first Saturday in May.

Floated Thornapple Dam to Flater's last Saturday. Smallbass fishing was slow, got about 5. No muskie and got one 30 inch pike on a topwater. Two gates part open on the dam, heavy river flow, and a lot of loose pieces of grass. Fouled the lure most every cast including topwaters. Beers were cold at Flater's so it was a good day.

Badgerman,

Any info on water levels or types of baits that are working well this time of year. Gonna do a two day float from big bear to flambeau lodge this weekend.. Just curious if the fish were bitin on anything special. Only done mid summer floats on this river prior to this year. Any info that you would be willing to share would be much appreicated.

Tight Lines,

I have fished the area below the Thornapple Flowage. If you take Cty Hwy P west from St Hwy 27, follow it to Cty Hwy E. If you go south on E, you will find a couple of area to fish from shore. There is a boat landing about a mile or two south of P, and I have had some good Smallie action there.

I've also had luck fishing the Chippewa south of Bruce. River Rd runs south off of Hwy 40. If you follow it far enough, there are a couple of spots you can fish from shore.

There are also several good spots to fish from shore downstream from where the Flambeau meets the Chippewa.

went up this week, lots of pike.few walleye and smallies.traditional places were hard to fish, higher water and current made it tough.did best casting points and tight to shore with swim baits. half the smallies still had eggs.the wind had something to say everyday. be up again for the holiday.maybe the topwater bite will start.thats the only thing i know for sure,it will start, just a matter of time.

It seems like the walleyes below big falls have already spawned out...not too much going on like years past. Caught some real nice cats, some walleye, and a 20" smallie. Anybody got some ideas for a walleye bite? I'll trade info......
