Well last weekend was downright awful for muskie fishing. During the two days of the Balsam Lake Rod and Gun club tournament only 3 muskies were boated. This lakes gone downhill so much the last few years it's not even worth fishing anymore. Didn't see a single fish all day. Used to be days even in the sun and heat you'd hear fish being caught all over the lake. Only place I ever hear guys catching them now is in the bay by the boat launch.

Any luck for anyone fishing muskies this year? Have always fished a tournament on this lake in August but would like to try it earlier in the year when the weeds aren't quite as thick. Any suggestions or tips on where to start?

Fished a few hours this PM for panfish. Crappies are shallow. Lots of different sizes. Kept about a dozen nice ones. Others found them along the shore really shallow around the docks. I used plastics. Lots of sunnies in the shallow area by the landing, which is pretty gunky. Lots of smaller and medium bass active shallow too.

Used to live on that lake and fished it hard, not much for a hot pike bite, but, when you get one, usually a quality fish.

Walleyes, few and far between and more scarce last 6-7 yrs, after the spearing took what few fish that lake actually had.

Good luck if you go, be careful with public launch, springs litter that west end and make for bad vehicle launching

How are the ice conditions out on Deer? Is there a decent pike bite, also is there any decent walleye population out here.

Fished out here on Saturday and boy was it a tough day. This lake is impossible to fish on a bright sunny weekend in August. If you must fish musky just fish for bass and northerns in the weeds and maybe you'll get lucky and hook one. Bout the only advice I have for this lake. Have to fish it once a year and dread it everytime. Good luck.

Fished 10-4:30, caught 20 perch. Seen sunfish, crappie and bass on the camera, but they didn't bite. Found a nice spot in 17ft, away from most permanent shacks.
