ITS COLD-Just a reminder-Let your boat trailer Drain for about 20-30 B4 pulling up the landing and coating like an ice skating rink-that's why I'm sharing this 60sec video-
Hillbillycraz, a 4 wheeler is as much a tool as an ice auger is for ice fishing nowadays. My days of long hikes are gone as well. I wouldn't be fishing if it wasn't for the machine. I chose the wheeler over a snowmobile. Wheeler is a year round use machine. As far as driving my truck on the lakes, I'm done. Most of my fishing is done in the central part of the state where ice doesn't get thick as heck.. Had a good friend go through last year. His bill was over $5000 to winch out his truck.
You can pick up a great snowmobile for ice fishing for under $1000
That's tuff... The lake has gotten pretty popular the last few years.. The only place I can think of is buckhorn state park boat ramp but still a good walk to the river channel.... Maybe a cheaper ATV is possible... Opens a new world of options all over the central part of the state... Including lake Onalaska..Best thing I ever did for ice fishing.
Is it to early to talk about ice fishing?
When I was in my 40's we fished castle rock in the little yellow river area. We used a old trail that led us down to the little yellow and we walked all over the area, pushing out to the big lake. Now the area is a housing development and our access trail is gone. Also complicating things is our milder weather, when have we last found safe ice in early December.
I'm also a disabled fishermen, the long walks are impossible. By the time pickups get on the ice, prime fishing is over. Safety is always a concern, I have friends I fish with and none of us are younger than 40. I/we are pretty well equipped with hub shanties, vexilars, augers and good equipment. No ATV or snow machine. We live in Monroe county to the west of Castle Rock.
Last year I talked to the people at Dirty Turtle and that seems like a starting point. Does anyone have any good advice for a person who would like to try it again.
I'd also like to mention the North American Squirrel Association. NASA. They're not that big in our area, closest chapter is in Tomah, but they do sponsor a ice house on Lake Onalaska near La crosse. A younger man with a snow machine could make an interesting partner. Thanks.

Another nice Tuesday on the water! There were a few others fishing but not as many as last week. It was a little chilly when I got there around 9 am. Air temp went from 31-55 and surface water temp went from 48-52 when I left around 1pm. Multiple small eyes boated and a couple giant drag takers got off (prob carp or sturgeon). Jig-n-crawler again, found fish a little deeper this time; 12-16 FOW. Lots of algea where I fished today also, almost the opposite end of the lake as I fished last week.
56° - 60° F
71° - 75° F
Nice day out there today! There were quite a few other fishermen out for a Tuesday, but I was pretty much by myself in the area I was investigating. It could have been the last 70+ degree day of the year so I had to get out for a couple hours around lunchtime. I boated 10+ eyes and a few white bass in less than 8 FOW on jig-n-a crawler. Water temps around 60 and LOTS of algea today where I was. No keepers, but most were within 1/2 inch of being there for next year! The wind came up so I trolled/drifted crawler harnesses with equal success.

Well All good things must come to a end... It was a good season for my family.. The spring was great we got some beautiful crappie and walleye... I even had my stepdad and mom out catching fish... This was the first time they fished with me hope it will not be the last... July and August sucked algae and boat traffic was horrible but my driveway is awesome...
The feed bags were on this morning..put in at 7:30 fished till 9ish boat control was a problem trolling...In That time we boated 4 legal eyes 9 shirts 6 crappie and a handful of white bass... Yes all trolling.. Chrome and white were the hot baits at 1.5 with the wind 1.75 against it..Way better slower.. Water temperature 54 to 58 air temp was 37 plus north wind at 10.. chilly out there..
Until ice season this is about it for me I may post a wise guy remark .. On my way to chase whitetails.. Everyone be safe on the water or in the woods and enjoy your time in the outdoors.. Respect each other and our natural resources.. Happy Season's to all.. Over and out..
Fished today from 9:00 to 12:30. 3-way rig with floating jig and minnow. They had a gate open at the dam, and the resulting current had the white bass stacked and super-aggressive in my first spot. Not the species I wanted, but it was fun. Good average size. Also got a nice smallmouth and several short walleyes. No keepers. The best were just under 15 inches.
