Heading up to Owl Lake and or Big Sand Lake.  It's been a long while since anybody has posted reports for this Big Sand Lake.  Can anybody report the conditions of these lakes, especially Owl Lake just west of Viola Lake?  I'd like to know if there's so much snow that will make it difficult to get onto.

My brother John and best friend Al and I have fished this lake every year for the last 30 years. I am always amazed at how underfished and under valued this lake is by the locals. we average over 100 bass a day. every day for our 9 day trip. No we are not hauling in 7 pound bass this is freakin northern wisconsin not florida but we catch lots of nice fish above 16" and always some nice 4+ lb bass as welll. In the fall we have caught lots of very healthy 5 lb bass. 90 % of these fish come on TOPWATER lures! Is there a more exciting way to catch bass? A fish exploding thru the water to inhale a giant zara spook or as we call it the "Grana Banana" we average 700 bass and 500 pike, crappie, bluegill and bowfin every trip. The people who live and visit this lake could not be nicer and although we take lots of exotic trips every year this is by far our favorite week. Cool

Fished it last week. It was slow. Caught 1 dink crappie on the north end and had a pike break me off. Fished from 3-7 pm. Tried minnows and waxies. Still hard to get around. Bring a shovel. Got stuck 2 times leaving the lake. Also fished Clam one day. Had better luck getting about 10 nice crappies and a few gills late afternoon early evening. Travel on Clam was easy going.

ventured out to big sand friday night for a few hours and caught a few crappies. Nothing to brag about, but just nice to get out. The fish were mostly suspended in 20 feet of water. I would NOT recommend driving out there even with four wheel drive. I managed to mess up my exhaust AND drive shaft both in one night! The snow is deep and some of the drifts were bad and there are some slushly spots to compound matters. Snow machine is definitely the way to go out there right now.
