Green Mountain and Tahuya State Forest

Explore the wild beauty of Washington during your next camping adventure. There are two state forest - Tahuya State Forest located in Mason County at 23,000 acres and Green Mountain State Forest in Kitsap County at 6,000 acres.. Spend time getting out in the great outdoors to hike a multi-use trail system, fishing in the crystal clear streams and lakes, or simply reading in a hammock. Great for those who love to mountain bike, ride motorcycles, horseback riding or run the trails - there is something for everyone at these two great state forests.

A unique aspect of these parks is that the timber production from these two areas funds the construction of public K-12 grade schools within the state. This area offers trail riding, off-road riding, fishing, and much more. With nearly 500,000 visitors stopping by to camp and enjoy the outdoors, this area of the state can be pretty busy during the peak season. Once you arrive in your motorhome, you can see why everyone falls in love with the tranquil beauty of the forest.

If getting away from the hustle and bustle is your goal, then the Tahuya and Green Mountain State Forest are the places for you. Head out west to the breathtaking countryside of Washington state, right outside of Seattle and Olympia, Washington, at only about an hour's drive from each city. Neighbors to Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park, this area is an excellent place to visit for all outdoor enthusiasts. Once you arrive at either Green Mountain or Tahuya State Forests, make sure to keep your RV on the paved roads with your Discovery Pass prominently displayed. Be on the lookout for runners, horses, ATVs, and motorbikes as this area is popular for outdoor recreation. Both state forests follow the "Leave No Trace" policy, so plan to pack out what you pack in.

Kammenga Canyon Campground

An excellent place to camp in your RV at Tahuya State Forest is Kammenga Canyon Campground. With tons of trails to access, this area is great for families as it is next to the Tahuya River. You will need to bring in your own drinking water; however, there is one restroom. A Discovery Pass is required to camp here. Come here to rest and relax on your next camping getaway to the state of Washington. RVs up to 30 feet long can be accommodated.

Camp Spilman

Find your oasis and bring your RV with a Discover Pass to camp at this popular. well-maintained campground in Tahuya State Forest. Next to the Tahuya River, this area provides access to water for fishing and 200 miles of trails during your stay. This campground is first-come, first-reserved, and can accommodate RVs up to 30 feet long. There is a restroom available, along with fire pits to cook your next outdoor meal.

In-Season
Fish

There are many areas to fish while visiting Green Mountain and Tahuya State Forests from April to October. If bringing a motorized boat, check out Twin Lakes, as there is a boat launch for you to use. Fish from the banks of the Tahuya River, Aldrich Lake, Robbins Lake, or the Don Lake. Pack your favorite rod and bait in your campervan and head out to enjoy one of America’s favorite sports.

OHVing

Popular among all-terrain riders, Green Mountain and Tahuya State Forest offer over 100 miles of trails. Bring your ATV or motorcycle to have some epic fun during your next motorhome camping trip. You’ll love the diversity in terrain as the Green Mountain Vista has some impressive views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier. A popular place to ride, you may want to head out early from your camping site before the trails get too crowded.

Take a Hike in the Wilderness

Looking for a great place to hike? In the scenic area of Washington, you needn’t look too far. The Wildcat Trail at Green Mountain State Forest is one of the many trails that range from from three to 10 miles of trails to explore. Check out the Gold Creek Trailhead at Green Mountain State Forest, which is great for beginner and intermediate hikers.

Stargaze

Stay up past your bedtime to see the fantastic night sky while camping in your motorhome at Green Mountain and Tahuya State Forests. On a clear night, stretch out on a blanket, bring out a telescope, and gaze at the millions of stars. Being away from city lights will provide more stars than you may have seen before like the Milky Way. There is nothing like stargazing while on an RV camping trip.

Have a Picnic

Step outside your RV to participate in one of America’s favorite pastimes during your next camping trip. Pack your favorite blanket to stretch out next to one of the several lakes to rest and relax. If planning for a larger event like a reunion or birthday party, check out the many group picnic sites near Twin Lakes. There’s nothing like spending time with family and friends outdoors.

Ride the Trails

This is one of the best horseback riding spots in the state of Washington, hands down. Make sure to grab a state forest map before heading out as you could easily spend days out on the vast trail system taking in the area’s diverse beauty. If visiting Green Mountain State Forest, check out the trails that take you to the top of the mountain, which is the second-highest peak on the Kitsap peninsula.
