Gifford Woods State Park

Gifford Woods State Park is located in Killington, Vermont. It is located very close to the Appalachian Trail, which makes it a popular spot for hikers determined to test their mettle on the trail. The park is located near the peaks of Killington and Pico. When you're in the park, you'll have easy access to the neighboring Kent Pond. You will also be surrounded by the beauty of the park, including lovely foliage changes during the fall.

Gifford Woods is important to Vermont's natural landscape because it is the site of one of the last old-growth hardwood tree groupings left in Vermont. An area of approximately 20 acres has been set aside as the Gifford Woods National Natural Landmark, a designation established by the National Park Service.

You'll have a variety of camping options when you come to Gifford Woods State Park. The park has four cabins that you can rent. The park also has 21 tent or RV sites that you can park your RV at, in addition to 19 lean-to sites that are available for campers. There are no hookups available in the park. You will find restrooms and coin-operated hot showers at the park for your use when you stay here.

Driving

Gifford Woods State Park is a state park located in Killington, Vermont. The park is located on Gifford Woods Road, and you will have a relatively easy time of getting to the park. You just have to travel north approximately one-half mile on Highway 100 at the junction of US 4 and Highway 100. It is located across the street from Kent Pond, where you can enjoy fishing.

The park has two camping loops that you can find your campsite at. The prime lean-to and camping sites are all around one loop, while other sites are at the eastern loop with the cabins. You'll find several parking areas, including at the park office, where you can also access free Wi-Fi. Several sites at the eastern camping loop are handicapped accessible, as are the bathrooms and showers along this camping loop.

You'll want to check into the campsites carefully. While 21 of the campsites are listed as tent or RV campsites, several of these will not fit an RV, so you'll need to bring your camping trailer if you are utilizing one of these sites or plan on camping in a tent.

Gifford Woods State Park Campground

When you camp at Gifford Woods State Park, you can rent one of the cabins or camp at one of the campsites that are available. The park has 21 sites designated for tents or RVs, although not all of the sites can support a camping trailer or RV. Some are only large enough to support a large tent. There are also 19 lean-to sites at the campground as well. The park has two camping loops that these campsites are located around, a western and an eastern loop that you can access after checking in at the park office.

The sites are all without hookups, so come prepared for primitive camping. The campground does have restroom facilities and include hot and cold running water. They also have coin-operated hot showers, and there is a dumping station for trailers. Several of the campsites and bathroom facilities are handicapped accessible.

In-Season
Fishing

When you come to Gifford Woods State Park with your RV, you will want to make sure to bring your fishing gear in your campervan. Across the road from the state park is Kent Pond, and you will find that the pond also has a boat ramp that you can utilize. If you want to learn to fish but do not have your own gear, don't worry. Gifford Woods State Park participates in Vermont's Reel Fun program, where you can borrow gear and learn to fish.

Outdoor Sports

If you come camping at Gifford Woods State Park, you'll probably be doing a bit of camping. Don't worry if that's not your only interest, as you will have the opportunity to take part in some friendly competition with your family, friends, or fellow campers. The park has a horseshoe pit that you can play horseshoes in. If volleyball is your game, you're in luck; the park also has a volleyball net set up in the day use field.

Bird Watching

One of the perks of staying at Gifford Woods State Park when you are camping in your RV or trailer is that this park has groves of old-growth hardwood trees. These trees provide homes for a variety of flora and fauna, which you can enjoy spotting while you are in the park. Especially during the fall, you can take in the scene of leaves changing while watching birds fly south for winter, such as the broad-winged hawk.

Hiking

One of the main draws to Gifford Woods State Park and camping here with your camping trailer or rig is the proximity to the Appalachian Trail. The park offers easy access to the Appalachian Trail, with a trail crossing over Highway 100 to provide access to the main thoroughfare. Hikers come from all over, so you'll be in good company. In addition, the park has a one-mile loop known as the Kent Brook Trail.

Biking

When you come to Gifford Woods State Park for camping with your RV, make sure you bring your mountain bike as you can enjoy a variety of trails. The park is located adjacent to Killington Mountain, and this has a bike park that you can enjoy. The surrounding forests have trails galore that you can explore with your bike, so you are sure to have a good time biking no matter what season it is.

Picnicking

Come prepared to enjoy a good picnic when you camp with your RV at Gifford Woods State Park. The park features a lovely wooded area located behind the ranger's quarters, which can be used for picnicking. This area also has a play area for children to enjoy. In addition, many of the campsites have picnic tables, so you don't have to eat on the ground while you enjoy the landscape around you. Firewood and ice are also sold at the park.
