Spavinaw State Park

Located in the northeastern corner of Oklahoma, Spavinaw State Park is an oasis that is perfect for water-loving RV campers. You’ll find some of the best fishing in the region, with species such as bass, walleye, crappie, and catfish. The park also has multiple swimming areas, if you want to cool off on a hot summer day.

The park is a great destination for hiking, with miles of trails leading through the Spavinaw Wildlife Management Area. The forests are packed with birds, as well as dozens of species of trees and wildflowers. The park also allows hunting in certain areas, giving you access to a wide range of game, including deer, quail, turkey, and waterfowl.

There are 26 RV sites in the park to choose from for your campervan, allowing you to camp with full modern comforts. The sites are also on the lake, so you’ll have scenic views throughout your stay. The campground is pet-friendly so you can bring your dog along. No matter how long you plan on staying, you’ll always have something new to explore at Spavinaw State Park.


Transportation

Driving

Spavinaw State Park is located in northeastern Oklahoma, and is within driving distance of cities such as Tulsa, Kansas City, and Fayetteville. There are few roads in the park, and most of them are wide, so you should have few problems with your RV.

If you are coming from Tulsa, take I-44 and OK-28 to reach the park in a little over an hour. Driving from Kansas City, take I-49 south to get to the park in around three and a half hours. From Fayetteville, take US-412 west out of the city and you will get to the park in around an hour and a half.

Once you get to the park, it’s just a short drive from the park’s entrance to the campground. There are few tight turns, so it’s easy to get to your site even with a large RV. The temperature usually stays above freezing, but there may be occasional ice on the road if you visit during the winter.

Campsites in Spavinaw State Park

Spavinaw State Park Campground

There are 26 campsites found within the park, all of which have electrical hookups for your rig. The sites also have picnic tables and fire pits. The park is dog-friendly, as long as you keep them on a leash. There are restrooms located within walking distance of all of the sites.

The campground is just a short walk from the park’s main swimming areas, and you’ll be able to access the trails that lead to the Spavinaw Wildlife Management Area. There are also comfort stations with restrooms and showers, as well as picnic pavilions within walking distance of the campground.

The sites can be booked online. You need to reserve your spot at least a day before you plan on arriving. The park is most popular during the summer months, and the sites fill up quite quickly. Be sure to book as early as possible if you plan on vacationing during peak season.

In-Season
Fishing

Lake Spavinaw is known for its fishing. There are a wide range of fish species in the waters of Lake Spavinaw, including channel catfish, crappie, large and smallmouth bass, sunfish, spotted bass, walleye and white bass. You can fish from the shore or take a boat out onto the water with the park’s boat launch.

You’ll be able to fish just about any time of the year and still get bites. The populations of the various fish species in the lake vary throughout the year, but many are at their peak in spring.

Swimming

Spavinaw State Park is a great summertime destination. You’ll find multiple swimming areas in the park, allowing you to unwind and cool off on hot summer days. There are swimming areas with shallow water that are perfect for families with small children.

There is also a picnic area nearby, in case you want to have a snack after your swim. The swimming areas are just a short walk from the campground, so you’ll be able to get from your rig to the water in minutes.

Hunting

Spavinaw State Park allows hunting in certain areas of the park. Visit Spavinaw Wildlife Management Area just outside of the park to hunt a wide range of game, including deer, quail, turkey, and waterfowl. The flint hills and prairie make for challenging and exciting hunts. There are many parts of the park where hunting is not allowed. Check with park officials before you hunt to make sure that you are in the proper area. Hunting seasons are strictly enforced, so always make sure that you are following all state hunting regulations.

Birdwatching

RV campers interested in bird watching will find a wide variety of bird species at Spavinaw State Park. The dogwoods surrounding the waters of the lake are also home to many species of birds that are native to Oklahoma. You may even get lucky and spot bald eagles as they pass through the park.

Oklahoma has a number of dedicated bird watching groups. Check their websites before you visit the park for more resources on the birds in the area, including checklists and field guides.

Hiking

Hikers will also find plenty of trails to keep them busy at the park. You can loop your way around Spavinaw Lake for scenic hikes through the dogwood lined waters. The park’s hiking trails are easy to access from the RV campground.

You’ll also be able to access the Spavinaw Wildlife Management Area just outside of the park. The area has rolling prairie, flint hills, and bottom lands, giving you plenty of varied terrain to explore.

Playing at the Playgrounds

RV campers with children will also find playgrounds to keep the kids entertained. They are located near the campground, so you won’t have to walk far. They are also close to the main swimming areas.

In addition to the playgrounds, the park has multiple picnic shelters and pavilions where you can have a meal or group reunion. You’ll also be close to all of the park’s trails, if you want to take a walk around the lake.
