History & Status of the Fishery
Ravine Lake (unnamed 82008700) is located in Cottage Grove Regional Park. The park is managed by Washington County Parks and requires an entrance permit of $5.00 daily or $25.00 annually. The park has a new playground, picnic shelter, restrooms, ample parking, and wooded hiking trails. The lake is 25 acres with a maximum depth of about 16 feet. The entire shoreline is undeveloped and provides habitat for a variety of wildlife. The lake is a good place to watch for egrets, herons, eagles, ospreys and waterfowl. There is a shore fishing station and a fishing pier on the northeast shore. The pier makes angling easier in the mid-summer when dense vegetation grows near shore.
The lake is primarily managed for walleye and bluegill with secondary management emphasis on largemouth bass and black crappie. Walleye fingerlings and/or adults have been stocked every year since 2002. They were sampled in low numbers and small size, with lengths ranging from 6.5 to 11 inches. Bluegills were sampled in moderate to above average numbers but again, small in size for lakes such as Ravine. The most common size group was 3.0 to 5.0 inches. Only 8% of the sample was over 6 inches, and the largest bluegill sampled was 7.5 inches. Black crappies are less abundant than in past assessments with only 8 black crappies documented in 2011. Most fish were between 8.5 and 9.0 inches, with the largest being 9.5 inches. Since the last assessment in 2006, largemouth bass have remained fairly abundant. Trap netting found good numbers of largemouth bass, however they are small 4.5 to 8.5 inch juvenile fish. The brown bullhead catch was high, with lengths ranging from 8.5 to 11.5 inches. The brown bullhead is a species of catfish that is not commonly found FiN ponds or lakes. If you are looking to catch brown bullheads then Ravine Lake is a good lake to meet that goal. In previous assessments of Ravine Lake black bullheads were very numerous, but none were documented during this survey. Also sampled in moderate to high numbers were hybrid sunfish, green sunfish and pumpkinseed. The lake has been stocked with several hundred adult white bass in 2004, 2005, and 2006, but none were sampled in this assessment.
