History & Status of the Fishery
Hennessy Lake is a small, riverine lake in the Prairie Brook system with light development around its shoreline. Access can be gained off the county road upstream of the lake. Water levels can dictate the ease of access, too high and a boat cannot get under the bridge and too low the stream will be difficult to navigate. Water clarity at time of survey was fair with a secchi disk reading of 4.5 feet. Despite its small size, Hennessy has a diverse fish community which could be influenced by migration via Prairie Brook. The lake is probably most noted for its black crappie and bluegill fishing. "Keeper" size fish of both species were sampled in the survey and anglers have reported catching large crappies in the winter time. The lake has an abundance of small northern pike with an average weight of 1 3/4 pounds. Despite the increase in numbers and poor condition (skinny), growth rates for the pike appeared normal. Yellow perch numbers, however, have decreased which could have a negative impact on pike growth rates. Perch can be an important food species for the gamefish in the lake. Walleye are present in the lake and likely migrate there from Little Birch Lake. Largemouth bass exist in the lake, but numbers appear to be low. Other species in the fish community include bowfin, brown bullhead, white sucker, yellow bullhead, black bullhead, and carp. Carp were abundant in Hennessy at the time of the last survey in 1991, but numbers seem to have stablized since then with no perceptible impacts to the fish community or habitat features. Channel catfish were not observed in Hennessy Lake in 2001 but are known to exist in the system upstream and downstream of the lake. The bullhead populations are at desirable levels and quality fish are present as most of the bullheads seen were over 11 inches long. Hennessy Lake's small size (48 acres) makes it vulnerable to overharvest of several species including bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and larger northern pike (over 24 inches). Direct influence from Prairie Brook and the prevalence of agricultural in the lakeshed has impacted water quality in Hennessy making it more fertile and turbid than Fuller Lake.
