History & Status of the Fishery
Hustler Lake is located approximately 27 miles NW of Ely in the BWCAW. The most common access to this remote lake is by portage from either Oyster Lake (240 rods) or Little Hustler Lake (10 rods). There are 5 designated USFS campsites surrounding the lake for overnight use.
Results from the 2016 survey of Hustler Lake indicate a fish community with low relative abundances. Cisco were the most common species sampled in 2016. Northern pike and smallmouth bass were also sampled. This is the first account of smallmouth sampled in Hustler Lake.
Northern pike numbers in 2016 (1.4/gill net) were similar to the historic average for Hustler Lake. The average pike sampled was 28 inches which is larger than the historic average length of 22.5 inches. The largest pike sampled in 2016 was just over 34 inches long. Northern pike have been sampled in every survey of Hustler Lake.
Smallmouth bass numbers in 2016 (0.9/gill net) were average compared to other similar lakes in the area. The seven smallmouth sampled were between 13 and 18 inches long. The largest smallmouth sampled in 2016 was 13 years old. Smallmouth bass were also observed near shore in various sizes during the 2016 survey.
