HISTORY AND STATUS OF FISHERY

Ely Lake is located approximately 2 miles southwest of Eveleth. It has a surface area of 827 acres and a maximum depth of 70 feet. Water clarity is very good and aquatic vegetation is abundant. Access is by concrete ramp with limited parking space.

Ely Lake has a small inlet and a fixed concrete sill dam at the outlet that is a barrier to upstream fish movement. A culvert also diverts some water to St. Mary's Lake for water supply to the City of Eveleth. Lake bottom substrates along the shoreline of Ely Lake are mostly sand and gravel. Plants are abundant along the shoreline to a depth of 15 ft; the most common plants are muskgrass and various pondweeds. The shoreline is heavily developed with homes and cottages.
