History & Status of the Fishery
Cummings Lake is located approximately 12 miles NW of Ely in the BWCAW. This scenic lake is surrounded by a forest that is primarily coniferous with shorelines composed mostly of boulders and ledgerock outcrops.
The most common access is from Burntside Lake, entering the BWCAW through Crab Lake and continuing to the southeast end of Cummings. There are 13 designated USFS campsite located around the lake for overnight use. Cummings is a popular destination for wilderness enthusiasts and anglers searching for smallmouth bass.
Nine species of fish were sampled during the 2019 survey of Cummings Lake. Cisco (26%) was the most common species sampled. Smallmouth bass and northern pike were sampled in relatively low numbers. Bluegill, hybrid sunfish, largemouth bass, rock bass and yellow perch were also sampled in low relative abundances.
Smallmouth bass numbers in 2019 were identical to the long term average for this lake and above average when compared to other similar lakes in the area. The average smallmouth sampled measured 11.7 inches in length which would make it about 8 years old. The largest smallmouth sampled was 15.5 inches long. Smallmouth abundance is likely higher than the 2019 gill net catch indicated. Smallmouth were actively spawning during the survey period and this combined with their "net shy" nature would likely negatively affect the gill net catches. Anglers targeting smallmouth were having good success with fish in the 10 to 15 inch range.
Northern pike numbers in 2019 of 0.7/gill net were below the long term average and below average (2.1/gill net) compared to other similar lakes in the area. However, average pike size was 31.8 inches long which is larger than the 28.6 inch average of past surveys. The largest pike sampled measured 34.8 inches long.
