History & Status of the Fishery

JEPPSON LAKE IS A VERY SMALL LAKE (37 ACRES) THAT IS RENOWNED LOCALLY FOR PRODUCING LARGE BLGS. CRAPPIES, AND NOP. IT IS SUJECT TO HEAVY FISHING PRESSURE BOTH SUMMER AND WINTER. THE ONLY PREVIOUS SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED IN 1983. DESPITE THE HEAVY FISHING PRESSURE, THIS SMALL LAKE MANAGES TO MAINTAIN GOOD GAMEFISH POPULATIONS. MOST SPECIES PRESENT IN THE LAKE FALL BETWEEN THE FIRST AND THIRD QUARTILE FOR THIS LAKE CLASS (SCHUPP'S #28). ONE NOTABLE EXCEPTION IS YEP. YEP WERE FAR ABOVE THE THIRD QUARTILE IN THE PREVIOUS SURVEY AND ARE EVEN HIGHER IN THE CURRENT SURVEY, OVER THREE TIMES THE THIRD QUARTILE VALUE. THE GILLNET CATCH OF NOP, ABOVE THE THIRD QUARTILE IN THE PREVIOUS SURVEY, HAS DECLINED TO JUST UNDER THE THIRD QUARTILE. NOP GROWTH RATES AND LENGTH FREQUENCIES DISTRIBUTION ARE GOOD. BLG ABUNDANCE IS APPROACHING THE THIRD QUARTILE AND GROWTH RATES ARE GOOD. BLG SIZE STRUCTURE EXPLAINS ANGLER ENTHUSIASM FOR THIS LAKE, 18% OF TRAPNET BLGS WERE OVER 8 INCHES IN LENGTH. WAES, NOT FOUND IN THE PREVIOUS SURVEY, ARE AT THE THIRD QUARTILE FOR THIS LAKE CLASS. ALL WAES TAKEN IN TEST NETS WERE SIX YEARS OLD. THE WAE POPULATION IS APPARENTLY THE RESULT OF PRIVATE, UNAUTHORIZED STOCKING; THERE IS NO RECORD OF ANY DNR MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES ON THIS LAKE. WTS IS ANOTHER SPECIES NOT FOUND IN THE PREVIOUS SURVEY THAT IS NOW ACTUALLY SLIGHTLY ABOVE THE THIRD QUARTILE FOR THIS LAKE CLASS. THE INTRODUCTION OF WTS IS MOST LIKELY THE RESULT OF NOP ANGLERS USING THEM FOR BAIT. LMB AND BLCS WERE BOTH FOUND TO BE PRESENT BUT ARE DIFFICULT TO ADEQUATELY SAMPLE WITH STANDARD SURVEY GEAR; GROWTH RATES OF THE FEW TAKEN IN TEST NETS ARE GOOD. BLBS APPEAR TO HAVE EXPERIENCED AN UNUSUAL AND MAJOR DECLINE IN ABUNDANCE, FROM 99.50/GILLNET AND 3.00/TRAPNET IN 1983 TO 4.50/GILLNET AND NONE IN THE TRAPNET IN 1991.
