History & Status of the Fishery
Walleye fry were stocked into Pokegama Lake on May 17. The stocking rate was 500 fry per littoral acre which equals 450,000 fry. The fry were a local genetic strain sourced from the Knife River in April. Pokegama Lake was electrofished on the night of October 19, 2023, to evaluate the relative abundance of young of the year Walleye. The catch rate, 11 age-0 Walleye per hour, was above average (5/hr). The age-0 Walleye ranged from 5.6 to 9.2 inches in length with a 6.9-inch average. Age-1 Walleye were sampled at a rate of 19 per hour. Age-1 Walleye ranged in length from 9.2 to 13.2 inches and had a 10.9-inch average. The possibility of natural Walleye reproduction makes the fry stocking's contribution to the 2023 Walleye year class unknown.
