History & Status of the Fishery

Wallace Lake is a small (12.5 surface acres) lake with a maximum depth of 42 feet. The secchi disk reading, a measure of water clarity, was 11.5 feet. A private access is located on the lake. The immediate watershed is composed primarily of undeveloped hardwood forest. Three northern pike were sampled for a test-net catch rate of 3.0 per net. Three year classes were represented in the age-class distribution. Pike ranged in length from 14.3 to 20.1 inches with a mean length and weight of 17.5 inches and 1.1 pounds. Pike growth is slow; pike attain a mean length of 16.3 inches at four years of age. One yellow perch was sampled in the gill net for a catch rate of 1.0 per net. Eight yellow perch represented in the trap net sample for a catch rate of 2.0 per net. Yellow bullheads were the dominant fish present in the lake with a trap net catch rate of 29.0 per net. Yellow bullheads ranged in length from 5.5 to 10.8 inches with a mean length and weight of 8.3 inches and 0.3 pounds. A variety of sunfish species (green, pumpkinseed, and hybrid) were represented in the trap net sample. Trap net catch rates for hybrid sunfish and pumpkinseed sunfish were 5.5 and 4.8 per net, respectively. Forty-three percent of the hybrid sunfish were seven inches or greater in length.
