HISTORY AND STATUS OF FISHERY

NORTHERN PIKE ABUNDANCE HAS INCREASED SLIGHTLY FROM FROM 5.5 PER GILL NET LIFT IN 1987 TO 7.3. AVERAGE WEIGHT OF NORTHERN PIKE WAS 1.5 LBS. AND REPRODUCTION APPEARS GOOD, AS THE SAMPLE CONSISTED OF AGE CLASSES 2+ THROUGH 5+. BLUEGILL ABUNDANCE DECREASED SLIGHTLY FROM 26.4 PER TRAP NET LIFT IN 1971 TO 18.9 AND REMAINS BELOW THE AREA MEDIAN. DESPITE THIS APPARENT DECLINE IN ABUNDANCE, THE PERCENTAGE OF BLUEGILL MEASURED GREATER THAN 7 HAS DECREASED FROM 35% IN 1971 TO 5%. LARGEMOUTH BASS ABUNDANCE HAS INCREASED FROM 0.5 PER GILL NET LIFT IN 1971 TO 4.3. YEAR CLASSES 1+ THROUGH 3+ WERE REPRESENTED IN THE SAMPLE. SHORELINE SEINING PROVIDED FURTHER EVIDENCE OF GOOD LARGEMOUTH BASS REPRODUCTION, AS BASS WERE CAUGHT IN EACH HAUL. THIS LAKE APPEARS TO BE A GOOD BASS LAKE. YELLOW PERCH ABUNDANCE HAS DECLINED FROM 11.5 PER GILL NET LIFT IN 1971 TO 0.7. WALLEYE ABUNDANCE LOW AT 0.7 PER GILL NET LIFT, COMPARED TO 1.3 IN 1971. ALL WALLEYE CAPTURED WERE GREATER THAN 17 AVERAGE WEIGHT WAS 2.4 LBS. THIS IS SIMILAR TO 1971 WHEN ONLY ONE WALLEYE LESS THAN 18 CAPTURED. YELLOW BULLHEAD ABUNDANCE HAS INCREASED FROM 0.8 PER GILL NET LIFT IN 1971 TO 11.7. ABUN- DANCE OF OTHER ROUGHFISH SPECIES APPEARS TO REMAIN LOW.
