History & Status of the Fishery
A fall nighttime electrofishing survey was conducted on Big Swan Lake on September 11th, 2023, to evaluate young of the year (YOY) and yearling Walleye abundance. A total of 112 YOY were sampled for a catch rate of 112.0 fish/hr of electrofishing, which was the second highest catch rate ever recorded at Big Swan. The 2023 year class was the result of natural reproduction. The average length for the YOY was 6.4 inches, which was below Big Swan's historical average of (7.2 inches). In 2023, 89 yearlings were sampled, for a catch rate of 89.0 fish/hr of electrofishing, which was the highest yearling catch rate on record for this lake. The average length for the yearlings sampled in 2023 was 11.2 inches and was below Big Swan's historic yearling average (12.6 inches).
