History & Status of the Fishery

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in Round Lake was conducted on July 12th thru 14th, 2021 by Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) Program Staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot seine, where possible. Backpack electrofishing was completed at 24 sampling stations. Similarly, and 50-foot seine was used to sample 19 stations, and site conditions prevented the use of seines at five stations. Nearshore sampling captured 23 species of fish including five species that are intolerant of disturbance (Blackchin Shiner, Blacknose Shiner, Burbot, Iowa Darter, and Rock Bass) and two that are tolerant of disturbance (Black Bullhead, and Fathead Minnow).

A concurrent summer trap net survey was conducted by IBI Program Staff. Nine trap nets were set along the shoreline in locations that encompassed multiple habitat types. Brown Bullhead, Walleye, and Northern Pike comprised a majority of the trap net catch by biomass.

The nearshore and trap net data were combined with gill net data from a June 24th 2019 standard survey to describe the fish community and provide a Fish-based IBI (FIBI) score. The FIBI uses fish community data to measure a lake's health, and the types of fish species present can help identify any stressors that may be negatively affecting the lake environment. In Minnesota lakes, certain fish species cannot survive without clean water and a healthy habitat (Blackchin Shiner, Iowa Darter, and Rock Bass), while other species are tolerant of degraded conditions (Black Bullhead, Fathead Minnow). The FIBI score, composed of several fish community diversity and composition metrics, indicates the overall health of a lake by comparing it to what is expected for a healthy lake. For additional information on the FIBI, search for "lake index of biological integrity" on the mndnr.gov website.

Data from this survey provides supporting evidence that the fish community in Round Lake is likely adversely impacted by stressors as indicated by an FIBI score just below the impairment threshold for aquatic life use determined for similar lakes. Data from this survey will contribute biological information about the health of the fish community to the Big Fork River Watershed assessment process in coordination with MN Pollution Control Agency.

Three men, 24 fishing hours, five jumbo perch on a bluebird day to start March. We accessed the north shore from a resort, turning by Williams Septic. My lone perch was a fat 9 incher. A local bait shop person indicated he had seen a 15 incher this winter from there and reports at Little Winnie would indicate others had success there. Our neighbors from Madison, WI had a half dozen keepers, one a fat 10 incher. My friend caught four northers on his jig pole to go with his lone perch. I include the other results for a better rounded view for the curious. I used 8 holes to get the one perch.
