Leighton Lake, a 229 acre lake that lies between Cohasset and Remer, is in lake class 23. It is primarily known for producing walleye and northern pike. Natural reproduction and immigration from the Mississippi River are sustaining the gamefish populations.The walleye gill net catch rate (3.7/set) was within the expected range for this lake class. Walleye sampled in gill nets ranged from 14.7 to 24.2 inches and had a mean length of 20.2 inches. Grawth rates are near the expected range for all ages.The northern pike gill net catch rate (11.7/set) exceeds the expected range. They ranged from 11.2 to 29.0 inches and had a mean length of 18.1 inches.The largemouth bass gill net catch rate (2.5/set) was high, exceeding the expected range. (In contrast, the trap net catch rate was 0.4/set.) Largemouth bass are not typically sampled well in the assessment nets. The growth rate was near the expected range for all age classes.The bluegill trap net catch rate (7.7/set) was within the expected range. The trap net sampled bluegill ranged from 3.5 to 8.4 inches and had a mean length of 6.2/set.The yellow perch catch rate (4.8/set) was within the expected range.
