History & Status of the Fishery
LaSalle Lake is a 211 acre lake located in northwestern Hubbard County, 4.5 miles west of Becida. The lake has steep drop offs and is extremely deep, with a maximum depth of 213 feet. The part of the lake generally most productive for fish is the area less than 15 feet in depth, called the littoral zone. Only 16 acres or 7% of LaSalle is littoral, so the potential for fish production is limited. Because of this, there is a special regulation on LaSalle to reduce possession limits on most species. These reduced limits include five crappies, five sunfish, two Walleye, ten Yellow Perch, and catch and release only for bass. Anglers will need a Minnesota state vehicle pass to drive into LaSalle state recreational area that surrounds the lake. Within the Recreational Area, a concrete boat ramp, and a fishing pier is located on the north end of the lake. Fishing opportunities within LaSalle Lake include Northern Pike, Walleye, Yellow Perch, Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, and Black Crappie.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different types based on physical and chemical characteristics. LaSalle Lake is in class 23. Class 23 lakes are irregularly shaped, have deep basins, and have hard water with good water clarity. Other lakes in the Park Rapids area include, Spearhead, Benedict, Blue, Boot, East Crooked, and 11th Crow Wing.
Northern Pike abundance was higher than past surveys, but within the typical range for lake class 23. Sampled Northern Pike had an average length of 21.25 inches and weight of 2.2 pounds, with pike measured up to 30 inches during the survey.
Walleye abundance was up from previous surveys. Several different year classes of walleye were sampled with fish ranging in size from 11.7 to 24.4 inches. Yellow Perch sampled during the survey ranged from 5-9.5 inches. Although they may be too small for some anglers, smaller perch are an Important forage species for Walleye and Northern Pike.
While LaSalle Lake is not a typical Largemouth Bass lake due to the low littoral area and limited areas of submerged aquatic vegetation. Largemouth Bass were sampled with an average length of over 12 inches, and the Largemouth Bass sampled in the gill nets averaged 1.8 pounds.
The same factors that limit bass within the lake also limit panfish. Bluegill abundance was normal for the lake class but most Bluegills measured under 5.5 inches with a sampled fish measuring up to 8 inches. Black Crappies were sampled in numbers below the typical range for lake class 23, and measured from 7.8-9.2 inches.
Other fish species that anglers might encounter include Brook Trout, Greater Redhorse, Green Sunfish, Hybrid Sunfish, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, Tadpole Madtom, Tullibee (Cisco), and White Sucker.
