History & Status of the Fishery

Two runs were made using pulsed DC electrofishing. The first run was from the boat ramp down the state park side of the pond and the second was the return run on the highway side. The most common species encountered were Yellow Perch and Bluegill. Both species were primarily represented by small individuals. Few adult individuals were present though several pre-spawn Black Crappies and a few adult Northern Pike were sampled. Good numbers of adult Bowfin present as well. Collected several small Bowfin for Mussel propegation team.

No clear indication of winterkill noted, but overall lower than expected numbers of Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Black Crappie were sampled. Several small Bowfin were collected for mussel propagation team.

4 star rating
I gave a 4-star rating simply because I usually catch a few fish when I ice fish at Frontenac. I grew up right on the bank of this pond too, so I'm a little biased. There are sunfish, bluegill, perch, crappie, largemouth, northern pike, and several species of rough fish in Frontenac Pond. It's a shallow lake, mostly about 5 feet deep, but a hole or two in the 8-10 foot range, and gets most of it's fishing pressure in the winter when it's frozen, since there's no boat ramp. Summer fishing can be good there too though, either from shore or with a canoe, float tube or small boat and motor.
