History & Status of the Fishery
Hay Lake is a shallow 19 acre lake located in the City of Eagan, Dakota County. A narrow strait in the east end separates a bay of nearly five acres from the main portion of the lake, likely inhibiting water circulation and possibly fish movement. Approximately 75% of the shoreline is developed in single family homes with the remainder comprised of South Oaks Park, a City of Eagan park (6%) and a church with an undeveloped riparian zone (19%). Public access to the lake is from South Oaks Park where a fishing platform and trail to shore is located.
This population assessment is the first fish survey conducted on Hay Lake. Seven species of fish were sampled during this assessment: black bullheads, black crappies, bluegills, hybrid sunfish, largemouth bass, pumpkinseeds, and golden shiners. No species was especially abundant in this survey. Bluegills were the most common by number caught in the trapnets and gillnet. They were of an average size with a few fish over seven inches long. Largemouth bass, though not easily sampled in trapnets, were sampled and ranged in size from 5.5 inches to 16.1 inches in length. All other species were sampled in low numbers and were of a small size.
